Hands Across The Water: what do users think?
Kathryn Larmee: I was waiting to write about hands across the water agency from Ann Arbor Michigan until our post reports were finished. Now that they are completed. I would never recommend this homestudy agency to anyone. They often made errors. They didn’t have a strong grasp on filling out the paper work for the dossier/ requesting a courier to take our documents to the embassy. Things were so incorrect we had to re do the paper work and have it overnighted ( of course things were very close to 6 month mark). The extra costs and also the lack of urgency and guidance was mind blowing. They caused extra stress and panic often. We had 3 social workers assigned to us over the 3 year process. There were 2 directors over that time. I’ve called and asked questions and they often didn’t know the answers because the staff was always fresh out of college didn’t know how the adoption programs worked per country. My favorite was when the social worker asked me for the step by step for the Korean program. At the end my social worker was a contract worker and I was not allowed to have her phone number- I could only email her if I needed something. It made setting up post adoption meetings more of a hassle trying to coordinate everyone’s schedule. Also if we were struggling in our first year - it did not seem like they were there to support us.They also waited to the last second for every post adoption report- seemed disorganized and the final product would come looking unprofessional - they printed cover letters from previous notifications - and than using ink pens crossing out the errors (instead of fixing and reprinting the document)I hope they take this feedback and decide to make improvements to their agency for future families
Susan Marlin-Zeisler: This is the third foster agency we have worked with since 2012, and I have been nothing but impressed with the professionalism, knowledgeability, and dedication of our licensing worker, foster care worker, recruitment specialist, and foster care worker's supervisor (all of whom we have worked with directly - I am confident they are not the only capable people working here!) If, on the rare occasion I can't reach our worker, I've had to call the main office for assistance, I have been answered every time by a live person, not a voicemail box. I will probably never work with another agency after our experience here - they've got me! I take every opportunity to brag on our experience with them to others who are considering foster care or adoption. Hands Across the Water is hands down the best agency to work with!
Autumn Worley: This is the worst adoption agency ever my family has gone through 2 years of redoing paperwork because they either “lost it” or it “expired” so they say.. They never respond to any messages for weeks or months then they want to call.. when you talk with a supervisor they just blow it off.. I don’t suggest anyone go through this agency at all unless you just want to be jerked around..
Sarah Cencer: From the very beginning HATW and the people there have been spectacular. They truly took care of our family through the whole foster care and adoption process. Not only did they recognize the kids needs, but mine and my husbands as well. Could not find a better group anywhere! Thank you!
Ryden Allen: I applied to their foster to adopt program in October of last year (seven months ago). From day one, communication has been nil. I will regularly have to contact them half a dozen times over two weeks before I get even an acknowledgement. At one point, my home study was complete except for my fingerprints which "should be arriving any day now; [my case worker] will have it completed that same day." Two and a half months later, I've contacted four different people, including the supervisor, several times each, and received literally no response--as in, "this organization has fallen off the edge of the world" no response. Finally, I reached out to another organization and only then did I find out the supervisor, my case worker, had left. Thanks for letting me know during my dozens of attempts at contact! Even just an acknowledgement of receipt ("sorry, this happened, we'll get to it as soon as possible") would have placated me. I'm pretty forgiving, but I can't think of a single excuse for not getting even this much, especially over two and a half months, after I contacted them multiple times. I then found out I would have to repeat several steps of the process--by this time, it's been three months since "any day now." I only continued because I figured it had to be better than starting over. It's been two weeks and four emails, and I have yet to get ab response--three of these emails were submitting documents, so you'd think I'd at least get an acknowledgement of receipt, or an answer to my question about the last document needed. I can't imagine any excuses, and I can't imagine going through this process with this kind of "help". It's worth the headache, and would probably be faster, to start over with a different agency. I hope this is an extreme outlier rather than the norm.

Fostering Futures: what do users think?
Starquisha B: This agency is very RACIST & UNPROFESSIONAL!!! If I could rate them a ZERO I would, A MILLION TIMES!
Michelle McMichael: This agency is horrible, they are rude. They won't help you they won't let grandparents speak to their grandchildren which I believe is healthy for the children to stay in contact with their family when they are taken from the parents. They should also be able to visit with the grandparents as well. Foster parents are not their blood family they are only taking care of them. Children need to see their real family it isn't right. I don't agree with this agency and the way they are handling children. And the one comment that was made it is being run by young adults that don't have enough adequate training.
Heather Skidmore: If I could give this agency a zero I absolutely would. They are on the job when a child is being removed from family and parents but when reunification is the goal is takes weeks to get anything done. They do NOT have the best interest in children. They are unprofessional and extremely hard to work with. The caseworkers are children themselves and inexperienced in the field. I would not trust them with my adult life let alone an innocent child. Something needs to be done and because it is a state agency nobody wants to hear it from parents who are struggling to deal with these workers. They should be investigated. Period. Don't not go through fostering futures.
Marianne Wendt: We love working with Fostering Futures! They have been so knowledgeable, quick to respond and thorough. We have been licensed though them recently. We have loved working with our social worker Amanda, and are hopeful to have a child placed in our home soon!
Lynn Teribery: We have been foster parents with this agency for 3.5 years. The workers have been supportive, and always responsive to any questions we have. We are a lesbian couple, and this has never been an issue for anyone at the agency.
The Point: We have been with this agency as foster parents for going on 5 years. We have been part of reunification’s and now termination cases. In all of them the staff have always been friendly. Our licensing worker, Katie, has always treated us with respect and helped us learn our way through this adventure. Our case worker, Erica, has truly been a Godsend every step of the way. The workers have rejoiced, mourned, and walked through all the ups and downs with us and our family. Fostering Futures goes above and beyond in all they do!
T carroll: We are a borrowed bed with Fostering Futures. So far so good! Caseworker is great at getting back to us with questions we have, drop offs for parenting visits have run smoothly, and they seem on top of paperwork. No complaints & they've been really friendly to work with :)
Sarah Kreiner: We have had an overall good experience with Fostering Futures. We have fostered 3 children now through the agency. I will say that when I talk to other foster parents they always seem to think we are not getting enough support. We can't compare since we haven't worked with other agencies. But they have been responsive and empathetic and there for us. We have switched licensing workers three times now but have been with the same foster care worker the whole time. Which is most important since we have contact with her often. Fostering is the most difficult thing we have ever done in our life and I don't think that anyone or any agency can do enough to make this an easy journey.
Katie Branam: My Husband and I worked with Fostering Futures first to get our foster care license and now they are helping us through our first placement. The entire process has gone smoothly thanks to the employees’ and agency’s guidance. Our case has not been easy, but they have always been quick to respond and find answers for us. The monthly support groups are very helpful. We love working with Fostering Futures!
chris macinnes: This agency has to be the worst most unprofessional place anyone could ever step foot in. From disorganized staff to an extremely rude, condescending owner. What was ment to be a happy fun experience was a complete nightmare and a year of our life we will never get back. They constantly lie about the process and when you give any form of resistance and question some of the things they are asking for, after they tell you they don’t ask for it but want it in your case but won’t say why, they get mad at you and get very rude. I received my copy of the the home study and found multiple errors and twisted words in it. Just stay away there are other much better agencies in the area that you would be much better going to.
Marcus Sizer: Great experience.
Chris Lagona: Great organization to partner with - had a blast at the June 2017 event!
Ami & Gigi Amore: Fostering Futures has provided guidance and support through the entire process of becoming a licensed foster parent. My wife and I are not only a lesbian couple, we are also an interracial couple. Although we do not define our selves by these labels many would. Fostering Futures has created a safe space for our family to feel comfortable and valued to be exactly who we are. The main role for a foster care agency in my opinion, is to serve as an ADVOCATE for the children coming into care. This is clearly their mission, displayed by EVERYONE at FF. The road of becoming a foster parent is rocky at times, with many unknown variables in moments. Kind of like life, there are ebbs and flows. Fostering Futures will ride the wave with you, they provide support EVERY STEP of the way!! I could not be more grateful for the gift of truly growing my understanding of the true definition of unconditional love, with no expectations. Our family values and appreciates the support we have received so far on our wild and winding road into this ever forgiving system of foster care.
Andrea Lynn Hornik: Very unprofessional staff. Most agencies would support their clients during a life changing journey. The director Jennifer DeVivo is horrible, extremely manipulative and lies constantly for gain. I would not recommend this agency. Foster care and adoption is suppose to be a positive experience, ours has been a nightmare. Please do your research before choosing an agency. Your experience with the system is important as this journey is life changing for you, your families and all the children who walk through your door. You can look up your child placing agencies license and investigations on Michigan's website.
Tammy Talvitie: Supported us through transferring our license from another agency, matched us with two amazing foster children, then guided us through the process of adopting them. While foster care / adoption is a rocky road no matter what agency you're with, Fostering Futures worked hard and carried us through the entire process, and they continue to be there for us now, long after our case has been closed.
