This experience changed my entire's family life experience.After reviewing her extensive records, this doctor assured us by phone our child could have corrective surgery, that he had extensive experience doing this, and she should do quite well.When we arrived in Ann Arbor, this doctor us that they could not replace or fix the valve but would surgically create a gravity fed heart, and she had a good chance. She was refused a heart transplant because she had Downs Syndrome. At this time she was a happy healthy looking smiling 4 year old, they told us it was her only chance at living long life, and that we should do it right away as she was doing very well at this time.After the surgery, her ejection fraction was never above a 7 or 8, and not able to sustain life, they said they would keep her on support to see if she became stronger and improved. A week later, she experienced DIC, acute kidney failure, and became totally unresponsive. She lingered like that for another week, then died.Firstly, what unconscionable nonsense it is, that Downs Syndrome children can not receive heart transplants. I believe an experimental surgery was conducted to try to give her a functioning heart, BUT I was never told how experimental this was in order to make a truly informed decision.

Ashley Weidman: Richard was rude and unprofessional during our consult. He did his speech and then was rude about the additional questions I had claiming they were none of my business. He was condescending and said if I was so concerned “you should just do the surgery yourself”. I have never been spoken to by any professional as rudely as he spoke to me. He did not want to answer my questions or hear my concerns. He told me there is no reason why the nurses should tell me what they are planning to do to my INFANT son. We are finding care with another surgeon.

Charlie was a month old when she was finally diagnosed by Doctor Cutler. In my eyes these two doctors saved my daughters life. Doctor Cutler diagnosed Charlie and then immediately sent us to Mott's Children's Hospital.Thats where we met Dr. Ohye. Charlie had quite a few things wrong with her heart due to it being misdiagnosed. Dr. Ohye was very understanding, patient and compassionate. He explained everything clearly (probably a few times due to me asking so many questions). He didn't seem like someone who was "just a surgeon." He appears to be someone who is passionate about what he does and understands the seriousness of the situation for not only the baby but the family as well. Never once was he rushing us prior to surgery when handing over our little Charlie, he understood the fear and sadness. He also checked on Charlie numerous times before surgery and after while checking and updating the family.He was very involved. Humble and made us feel more at ease about our little girls future.Wonderful Guy. Great Doctor.
