Peter Collinson: The bathroom at my home was 66 years old and definitely needed to be completely updated. As a single man I was a little intimidated by the thought of having to select everything for the new bathroom. Jessica Garst at KSI was the consultant assigned to me. She was a huge help and was able to walk me through the entire process of selecting the floor and wall tile, the wall color, the shower door, etc. She made great recommendations and seemed to know which colors would work best with my tastes. The contractors hired to do the work did an excellent job and were flexible and easy to work with. Overall, I was very satisfied with the project and how it turned out. The only downside was that the project took several months to complete due to a variety of factors mostly beyond anyone's control. Carla Jones: I had a bath remodel done with KSI several years ago that included a fan installation. I just recently learned that the bathroom fan vent was not routed out of the roof and as result mold built up in my attic. I paid a contractor to remediate the mold immediately and requested reimbursement cost. KSI showed no compassion nor offered an apologize for this mold buildup in the attic over my bedroom . Colin McGrath: Well you have to know while shopping for something like this prices are no longer going to be what they were before covid, I will say that despite the prices that are on the website for quotes and things of that nature the quality of the cabinets in my opinion are seeming to be pretty good for what they are and I think some of these are designer cabinets, like major cabinet companies. Definitely before you buy anything to your research on the company and the brand of cabinets that you're thinking about buying and getting a quote for. Do your research to see if you're happy with the reviews and stuff like that. Always be smart with your money before you purchase something.

She also made a 3D model of our kitchen which was extremely helpful. She also provided information on knob and pull selection. The cabinets are beautiful. Nikolas Thompson: A2R did a fine job adding a room on to our home — replacing what was formerly a slab patio and wood deck. I enjoyed watching them work — methodical and precise, if not particularly fast. This is a reasonable and possibly desirable trade off.We were left with a beautiful room that looks every bit as custom built as we wanted.Importantly, these are good, kind folks to have around. Our project took 4 months — unbearable if the carpenters and tradesmen are difficult to work with. It was a pleasure to see them daily, and to watch the project take shape and culminate.The best thing I can say is that they took great care of our project and provided quality and lasting work.Of note, they use a handy app that allows you to see the scheduled work fully day by day, and they update progress daily with photos and notes. Jill Greenberg: My husband and I are absolutely delighted by the work that Forward Design and has done for us! We have lived in our 1924 bungalow for more than 40 years now, and last year decided to address the laundry list of problems that annoyed us during that time. We had a leaky basement with crumbling floor, a garage rotted beyond repair, a gravel driveway that would be much nicer if paved, icy back porch stairs in the winter, knob and tube wiring, and no first-floor bathroom! We contacted Forward to help us address these issues with an integrated design, and to manage the legions of sub-contractors.The finished product is fantastic. With a small addition we now have a fine first-floor bath, new kitchen, mudroom with breezeway to the new garage. Our basement is dry with a smooth floor. These changes are nicely integrated and retain the character of the house. The Forward team really opened our eyes to design possibilities that we had not considered. They were spot-on with advice and recommendations. The design process was interesting, and the team very accommodating and easy to work with, particularly when making hardware selections.Our building phase was not without a few bumps in the road – one large one being the Covid-19 shutdown of several months. Still we were very confident that Forward would provide us a quality build and address any issues. Our site manager, Rob W., did an outstanding job of moving progress ahead, working magic with scheduling sub-contractors, and keeping us informed. The sub-contractors all did superior work. (The excavator was particularly impressive). The Forward carpenters saw to all the rest. I was pleased that all the workers on site, were pleasant to be around as well as respectful of our home.To summarize: Forward Design and Build company did an outstanding job for us, meeting all our requirements. Their work meets high standards, is attentive to details, and Forward is very responsive when issues arise. The actual cost was quite close to the contracted amount. Our house is so much more livable now! I would highly recommend Forward for their quality design and workmanship, reliability, and management of sub-contractors. Danielle Hagan: My husband and I were just crazy enough to go through a complete kitchen/first floor renovation with two children under the age of 5. Up until February 2020 the Forward process could not have been smoother. Chad called me and asked all the right questions and just made me feel at ease. I knew my shopping was done at that point. Later, we met Carly who deserves a medal in Client Reassurance for all the times I said "Are you sure about this?" and she would say "Just trust me, that’s what I’m here for". Every time, Caryl was right! The design process was so collaborative and I always felt like I was being presented with well thought out design concepts based on the needs of our family. In Feb 2020, construction started and for a solid month we were plugging along full speed ahead, in fact, we were tracking three weeks ahead of schedule! I came home one day to find Brian leveling our ceiling so our crown molding would be straight and as he explained the whole process to me I just couldn't help but marvel at his keen sense of detail and exceptional skill! March 2020 rolled around and COVID happened. Yes, even a firm as exceptional as Forward couldn't work around the fallout of a pandemic but they still put their best foot "forward" and made us feel like we had not been forgotten. Our Project Managers Brian and Tim checked in with us at least once a week to see how we were doing and if there was anything they could do to help us keep our sanity. They kept me informed of plans to resume as soon as they possibly could and reassured me that this delay in time would not at all alter the price or the product. There were many times I thought to myself "would any run of the mill contractor be able to handle this kind of problem as flawlessly as Forward did?" I believe the answer to be, no. There were no delays in Forward getting back to work once they were able to.My family of four lived through the construction from May to August and while you hear horror stories, our experience could not have been better. All of the Forward carpenters and sub-contractors were beyond respectful of our home. There were many nights I walked through the construction area with no shoes because it was that clean and safe! I happened to be off of work one week and Jon was there working and he was just the nicest person you could hope to have in your home. He would ask me questions on how I would like something installed, give me some tips on how to use something, troubleshoot/problem solve with me on the spot, and he was available if I had any other random questions.Forward Design Build gets a 10/10 from me. I am a particular person and this project was no exception. As a female, I often feel like I'm made out to be a "Diva" or annoying if I ask for things to be a particular way and I NEVER felt that way from any of the Forward team. They would always say "Absolutely, we can figure something out" or "you're right that isn't quite right" or "You're paying a lot for this, we want it to be perfect, too!" Hire Forward! Karl Desch: We have worked with Forward Design Build for two large home remodeling projects. We live in Ann Arbor hills in a contemporary home (1960 vintage). The first was a new design of most of the lower levels of our house which includes a large home theater exercise area, guest bedroom and bath. The second was a complete kitchen remodel.The design process involves a series of meetings with Jef and the design team. Jef was flexible with the scheduling and met with my wife and I at work on several occasions. They use architectural drawings and computer models to help you visualize the remodel. They are also helped us go look at countertops, tiles, back splashes appliances and furniture.At the end of the design process you know what you are going to end up with.Having construction performed in your living space Is inevitably a pain. But the Forward construction team are awesome. They were reliable clean and courteous. Had great conversations with them about the job, building and life in general. You always know when to expect them in the morning because they do an excellent job communicating. They also did a great job showing you what they found when the inevitable "surprises" turn up. Like a pipe that appears when you break up the floor and has to be re-routed.We live in Ann Arbor. We feel like compared to our friends in other parts of Michigan, we pay more because we live in Ann Arbor. We think of it as the Ann Arbor markup. From what we can tell, Forward Design build is not the most expensive contractor around but they are not a discount outfit either. Most importantly, at the end of the process, you feel like you got what you paid for knowing the local market is what it is. With Forward, you know what you are ending up with because of the excellent design process and you know that the work performed is to a high standard and occurs on time without unnecessary gaps. They really listened to us and that is why we got just what we wanted and needed! We thought that Meadowlark was expensive but we knew the costs up front and then could make a cost benefit decision. I don’t mean to sugarcoat the process. There were problems particularly with getting supplies during the Pandemic but we felt Meadowlark did all they could do to minimize those delays and worked with us to problem solve. We would definitely use them again. We found that all of the Meadowlark employees that we had contact with we personable and tactful! Hilary Cohen: Meadowlark was the contractor for an addition to my 1929 Burns Park home, adding a second story bathroom with a large walk-in shower, and reorganizing and expanding space for guests, storage, and access. In addition, the first floor screen porch was rebuilt to bear the weight of the second story expansion. The success of the project was due to a number of great attributes of the company.1) They were really committed to producing a seamless match to the existing house, inside and out, something that was extremely important to me. You can't believe how hard and beautifully they and all their very skilled artisans worked on every detail - the plaster walls, the oak floors, the banister for the stairs - so that everything would match the period details of the original part of the house. Another example, all the doors from the house are original to 1929 so they even had a new door built that matched the others perfectly. The exterior roof line of the project also has that same integrity - so that the house appears to have always had the current silhouette. I want to make sure to mention the contributions of my architect, Connie Brown, of Rizzolo Brown Studio.2) Meadowlark has a very high standard of craftsmanship across the board, for their own staff, and for the subcontracting trades they work with. It was really a joy to see the level of pride people took in their work and their level of skill. The new spaces are beautifully conceived and finished.3) Their process for developing projects turned out to be a really good one, though at first I thought it involved a lot of meetings. But all that early planning saved a lot of trouble later on, especially because of the pandemic and the supply chain issues that arose. These guys are really experienced and I felt like in my case all their experience made for a good decision making process. Connie Brown, the architect, attended most of the design meetings which were held with Meadowlark's Melissa Filter, interior designer, and Rachael McClain, cabinet designer. This team was creative, inventive, patient, included me as an equal collaborator, and was willing to go back to the drawing board as many times as it took to get the best solution.4) That kind of attitude was also apparent once ground was broken. Jason Albring was the project manager and he did a lovely job of keeping things on a steady keel, always keeping me in the loop, and making sure that every detail was attended to and revisited when necessary. I want to emphasize that there was inventiveness at every stage of the project. That really delighted me, whether it was one of the trim carpenters, Randy, gracefully building the floor molding around an air register, or Connie and Rachel figuring out how to create a built-in bookcase where no space seemed to exist for one.I'm so glad I chose Meadowlark for this project. The outcome exceeded my expectations both in terms of the craftsmanship and the inventiveness of the design. And I thoroughly enjoyed the process. If I have another construction project, I will go back to Meadowlark in a heartbeat.

Richard B: You can expect high-level project coordination and execution from Meadowlark Design+Build. You can also expect them to listen to their clients, remember issues and follow up to completion. These behaviors might sound standard for any worthy building contractor, but many clients underestimate the multiple layers of complexity in a large project that can lead to disappointing results if experienced professionals are not running the show. I was especially impressed with the on-site project coordinator, who always carefully addressed my concerns. Meadowlark is probably the first address to visit if you have a project in the Ann Arbor area for which you want a top outcome with no excuses.

Christie McGuire: Meadowlark repaired some faulty trim on our house (trim was from a different builder). They were meticulous is going over every place where there was trim. They then used a much better product to replace the bad trim. They also replaced a window and door wall, again paying attention to every detail. We are extremely pleased with the quality of their work.

Tim Nurushev: Honestly, I am not sure what this company is about, but I am very thankful for their installation of the Level 2 ChargePoint electric car charging stations. Two of them. Came in very handy when I had to troubleshoot my Chevy Bolt charging circuit (went south and was only charging with Level 1 currents) so I was able to get there and check if it was actually the Bolt fault or my home Level 2 charger. It was the Bolt.

Tim Krause: We ordered a custom vanity from M J. The vanity showed up with dinged up drawer fronts. They ordered new drawer fronts for us but would not install them. After talking to Susan and Mike they told us they would not install the new drawer fronts unless we paid them $100. I told them both that we paid for a vanity that was defect free. They wouldn’t budge. Not cool since the vanity wasn’t cheap. I had to remove the drawer fronts and drill out new location holes and then reattach them. Not the kind of customer service I would have expected from even Home Depot let alone a high end custom company. We won’t use them again.

David Sutter: We hired Blake to finish our basement 2.5 years ago and I can recommend his work with confidence.Our project was a medium sized project of about 1000-1200 square foot of finished space including a full bathroom, wet bar, entertainment room, extra bedroom, and a home gym. We had a rough idea of our design but had not formally hired a designer or architect. Blake and I worked out all of these details together. I had talked with 3 other companies before settling on Blake. His pricing was fair and competitive…not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.What Blake gave was a true old fashioned builder experience (despite being a relatively young builder). When people come over, I can name my builder and say Blake built this. A larger design-build company cannot give this experience. Blake was on site almost every day and actually swings his own hammer with the rest of his crew. They do most of their own work and only sub out the things they truly cannot do or the things that just don’t make sense for them to do. He went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and for a while was meeting me on site once a week late in the evenings on my time to go over the progress and discuss our detail requests. In several areas, he gave us extra and a lot nicer level of finish than we requested, simply because it was going to result in a better end product. He took great pride in his work and I got the sense that he tries to do something special and extra for every customer. He also made a great effort to ensure that his crew and subs caused minimal disruption to our quality of life. They kept the site clean and arrived and left while we were away so there was no construction noise or interference with our family time.I have procrastinated in writing this, but this does give the perspective of being able to look back a little. His workmanship is standing the test of time. We have no problems at all with anything of the work that was done and it is very high quality with the best of materials and hasn’t aged at all. I can also attest to the pride he takes in his job as we (through no fault of his) have had our basement leak twice since he finished due to our own bad luck. Both times I called him to help and he was out immediately to help us figure out our problem and get on the right track to fixing it and keeping our basement nice. He did not charge us for this service and only did this because he is a nice guy and wanted to help us out. Thank goodness we were able to get each issue fixed quickly without any actual damage to our basement.As I said, I can recommend Blake with confidence. Coincidentally, we are building a second home up North. I am looking for my “Up North” version of Blake and I am having a hard time. Joseph Wilkinson: Two separate times for the same project handyman of Ann Arbor failed me.The first time upon getting someone out here to cut a hole in my wall so I could run the venting for a stove hood vent, a guy came out and measured, and never even bothered to get back to me with a quote. Upon waiting a week for the quote I reached back out and was informed another person would have to come out and they asked me, “do you want a quote?” Of course I want a quote, that’s literally what I’m calling for and you already failed once.Try number two. A nice guy comes out and quotes me a price for a job I could do but don’t have the time to accomplish being busy at work. I get the quote, and then tell them I will need to schedule this between demolition of my kitchen and reinstall. It’s a tight window.Here we are today and they are nowhere to be found. The handyman who took the job what’s gone AWOL and I’m sitting here late for work because they have again failed to live up to their end of the deal and do their job. So instead of paying someone to do this I will now have to do it myself after work today after incessant texts calls and emails to schedule this job for the past month and a half.I will never use your company again. You are unprofessional, untimely, untrustworthy, and have completely wasted my time.

Mike Smith: This review is not of the actual work, which was fine. This is reflective of the business practice, which must have changed since we used this company about five years ago and everything was great.We had a quote for an install of a bathroom exhaust fan. The morning of the install, it was initially canceled because the handyman was sick and they wanted to reschedule. A different person was not even offered till I pushed on it because I had already taken the day off of work to be there for this to be done. The installer came later than the originally scheduled appointment and took four hours for the install.The work was fine, the product installed was subpar and is very noisy. I now have to replace this. I never actually approved the product installed and only said, 'its fine' after it was done because the whole ordeal was long enough.Then, the bill. Came in 11% higher that what the bid was for, despite the fact that during the original bid I was told this would be the 'max' it would be. Yeah, apparently that was a lie.I will not be using this company again. Take your business elsewhere.
