Detroit Observatory at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor: what do users think?
Bruce Pickens: Great random place to take children or even a quiet date night
Jonathan Valdez: Really great spot to attend lectures and see parts of the U-M collections.Street parking can be troublesome. You could walk it if you’re using a public lot. There are bus lines that come through the area.
Vazir Fatehi: Just opened after years of renovations and the addition of a new annexe. Tours are going to start soon, but until then there's the Open night on Fridays. The students there are passionate and very knowledgeable and you get a fine sense of the history and use of the Observatory at the university. Scheduled time slots are assigned at entry for a look through the Fitz Telescope and depending on the various planetary and starry alignments in the season and ofcourse dependent on the light pollution from the nearby hospitals and residences, you can get to see the moon or other objects. Great for kids.
Craig Schroeder: Took my son here for the Friday open house. Cloudy weather so we didn't get to look through the scope, but it was still fun to look around and chat with the very knowledgeable and friendly docents. Will definitely try to make it back on a more clear night!
David Stone: The Detroit Observatory is the second oldest building on the University of Michigan Campus. Built in the mid 19th century it was a big early investment in world class science research at the new U.S. higher education institution. The newly completed (2022) classroom and addition makes the space suitable for all sorts of events and classes. The original telescope hardware and infrastructure provide excellent insights to the tools that brought astronomy into a predictive field. Critical to the early history of the University of Michigan this is a great way to get a sense of the institution’s early history.
Jason Shibley: Like everything else that's interesting around here, it was closed.
Rodney Udell: Awesome architecture, getting ready to go through a renovation that improve it's usefulness.
Mack Wells: Just to much walking
Mikki Sharp: It's a truly magnificent collection! Touring the facility, learning, and viewing the moon through the Victorian telescope is a very enriching experience.
Stefan Lines: Wonderful experience. Beautiful building even from the outside but a real treat to be inside such a historic building, with very knowledgeable and friendly guides. Clear skies meant a viewing through the 17ft Fitz Refractor.
Nicholas N: Actual Victorian era telescope right on main campus. An interesting experience. Very friendly guides.
Peyman Ramin: Cool place
Greg Mowatt: Cool, historic observatory
James Miller: Pretty cool. Historic. They'll still let you use the original telescope when the weather is nice. So check the schedule. Definitely worth a quick stop if you're nearby.
