I underwent surgery at OMSAA recently, and the process, from start to finish, was stress-free and even smoother than I had even hoped for. Cameron Greig: So many reviews from people who haven't gotten in. Don't listen to those. This is a highly discounted program as students are learning and performing the work under instructor guidance. They are 5th, 6th, 7th year students, not freshman doing dental work out of their dorm room. The wait to get in is extremely long, they were transparent about that, was about a year wait. I had some minor cavities and other work that wasn't extremely important to get done right away. If you need work done asap and you aren't already a patient, go somewhere else. If you are able to get into the program, have all your work done here, especially if you don't have insurance. It will save you a ton of money, I've had nothing but great experiences and quality work done.

I was finally able to leave a voicemail 3 weeks ago and I have not received a call since!!! EXTREME RECLUSE: I am fully aware that this is a teaching experience. A couple of days ago I had a "Simple Extraction of molar 19". Everything was straight forward. I was called while I was at work in Pontiac. They had an opening in 90 minutes. I hurried to get there. The school is being renovated. I think it would be best to find 3-4 acres and build a modern facility like the UNIV of Detroit did in 2002.The oral surgery clinic looks like it was constructed in the 1920s. The corridor leading to the treatment room was not wide enough for two people to pass in opposite directions. The treatment room looked prehistoric; sort of like a torture chamber. I looked past all that. On to the treatment. A young black student greeted me and he said he was assisting in my tooth extraction. He and the treating student explained the procedure. They made me feel comfortable. I told them I did not want to feel anything. They laughed and stated I will feel pressure throughout but little pain. I had a badly decayed molar. It broke off at the crown leaving the roots intact. They asked the instructor for guidance. The doctor had a real difficult time using manual tools. He then switched to a drill. The drilling had t aken 4 attempts. It was a workout for all of the 5 people, myself the two dental students, the dental assistant and the instructor. The doctor tried to hide his frustration.. After 1 hour it was out and they sutured me up. Every dental experience is unique. This was my first extraction using local aenesthesia. I experienced very little post op pain. Was this any different than going to a high priced dentist? No. The private doctor would have had to do it all alone. In summary, this was a very good experience followed by a very good outcome. A good job by these future dentists.

Oshan O'Connor: So much for getting a call back from these people. I called mine times and left four messages. I gave up on the Procedure I was supposed to get. It was a very scary time for me and I hope I never have to put my life in the hands of U of M again. They say keep calling. That’s their job. I shouldn’t have to call over and over.

I procrastinated my procedure here for years and years because I thought it'd be a student doing the work. The lady I scheduled with said a student would only do it if the wisdom tooth was practically out in it's own! As to the person who never received a call back, I'm pretty sure they have to receive your referral BEFORE they'll call you back and I'm pretty sure the machine states that. They are very busy.

david m: PATIENTS BEWARE... This place is a butcher shop. My wife was there yesterday for 2 extractions. She was worked on by a first year student with 0% experience. She was yelled at several times by the "Teacher" because she reacted to being hurt. After the worst experience with a dentist ever, i now have to take her to the emergency room to get some kind of antibiotic. They missed with the numbing shot, filled her nasal cavity and then proceeded to try extractions anyways. After several minutes of wrenching on her teeth, one was twisted sideways and the other was now broken, they attempted to send her away. After several minutes of attempting it was finally apparent the "student" was not equipped to do this, and the teacher intervened. If you love yourself or your family do not ever take them here.

Bevin Deak: While the staff that I encountered were friendly enough, after an extensive biopsy and two teeth extractions, I was given zero discharge information. I asked a few questions that I could think of. Now post surgery I am worried about every move I make and in intense pain. They should not be performing these surgeries if they cannot properly prepare patients to go home!!!!

Every interaction with surgical, nursing, and administrative staff showed attention to detail and an interest in providing a positive experience for patient and family. The procedure was modeled ahead of time so no surprises and desired outcome achieved. Before, during, and after activities were clearly explained before day of procedure so we understood what to expect.

Bethany Masters: Cannot even express how thankful I am to the UofM dental staff.I had a really bad wisdom tooth causing me a great deal of pain.I had a different oral surgeon in Dearborn basically tell me that I'd have nerve damage for the rest of my life if he extracted it.I was full on panicking. I left a message at UofM and got a call back the very next day. Erica was the one who helped me out and she managed to get me seen the very next day for a consult.They ended up telling me that if I didn't mind waiting a little while I could get the extraction done that day. Heck yeah. I'd rather wait an hour than be in pain for weeks until I could get back in.The doctor was amazing. The staff was amazing.

Mone W: I had an appointment at 1pm and was seen for about an hour and a half. I didn't leave until 4:30 pm. I was essentially forgotten for 2 hours.I notified one of the people walking by halfway through, but I had to press the help alarm button to actually get attention. By the time the person who was supposed to come see me came by, they didn't "have anything on me". The only people who showed urgency or worry was the resident and the person who checked my vitals. As of now, I'm not even sure if I'm having my procedure. And I still had to pay ~$100 for another scan because the one already on file was 15 days older than a year.This just wasn't a great experience.

Ellen Brennan: Best oral surgery group ever. IF YOU HAVE TMJ, GO TO THESE PEOPLE. I have a very bad case of TMJ, a jaw disorder that limits how wide my mouth can open and causes immense pain. I had a reconstructive surgery one year ago to remedy some of the problems, but now I needed to get my wisdom teeth out. Two other surgeons/groups turned me away before I came here because there was a high chance that the wisdom tooth removal would aggravate my jaw and I'd be back to square one. Well, Dr. Sam Bae and the rest of the team at UM Oral and Maxillofacial surgery were amazing. They extracted all 4 in about 15 minutes with a minimal opening. One week later and I haven't had any jaw issues yet. They are the first group who really seemed to understand what TMJ is like, were sympathetic to the risks, and minimized them more than I thought was possible. These doctors are amazing, and I'm very picky so that's saying something.

Once contact was made with the doctors at UofM, they helped facilitate everything and got us in immediately. They were phenomenal. The best bedside manners we have ever encountered. They treated us as if our son was their only patient. Don't bother looking anywhere else. These guys are top notch!

He also had an assistant with him. I can't remember her name. She was a black lady and her name started with a T. She was the best I have ever seen. She calmed me down and helped me stay calm the entire time I was there. If I could rate them a 10 I would. Hands down! My new permanent surgeon!!!!

Jennifer Robbins: I had horrible teeth due to enduring chemotherapy twice and needed to remove all of my teeth and get dentures. I was extremely nervous about this whole process because the last place on earth I like going to is the dentist and I had no idea what to really expect. I also had to go through this process fully conscious (they didn't put me under) because my insurance wouldn't cover it and I couldn't afford to pay out of pocket for it. Dr. Sanker was my surgeon and he not only did a great job, but he was extremely patient and made sure to walk me through the whole process as he performed my oral surgery to remove all my teeth. He comforted me about the healing process and I had no troubles at all. I felt like I knew what to expect pre and post operation and healed nicely. I honestly wish I wouldn't have put off my surgery for so long because it went so much better than I expected. Now I can smile without feeling embarrassed again and don't have to deal with all the pitfalls of failing teeth. I can't thank him and his staff enough for everything.

DJ Davis: I'm 35 and had to have tooth #17 (lower left wisdom tooth) removed. I went to Dr. Lopez. Personality wise I'd give him 4 stars. He was friendly, silly, and patient with me and my questions prior to the work being performed.I called him after the initial consultation and advised him that I had severe anxiety about having that tooth removed without general anesthesia. I asked him to prescribe a oral sedative (standard practice) prior to my appointment. And he said he didn't want to do that since I was getting the "laughing gas" too.So I sat wide awake literally shaking while he extracted the tooth. And when I told him that I could still feel the pain as he pulled out the tooth, he gave another shot and continued to work without pausing to let it kick in.After the surgery, I learned he had to cut around tooth 18 to get to tooth 17. I wish I had been better informed. I literally asked him if the tooth next to the extraction site would be affected and he said "no". But it is. It hurts. The gum tissue around it will have to hopefully tighten.My one follow-up visit to make sure I was healing right made me feel like I was worry wart or something. I've never had an extraction, let alone a surgical one. I shouldn't be expected to not have questions. The staff was nice enough though. It could have gone better.
