David Olmstead: Cal Munson is the best--certainly the best piano technician. He has been giving us quality service for 20 years are so. His tuning is top notch. More than that, he offers helpful suggestions on maintenance and getting the best piano sound. His charges are reasonable--my impression is they are generally less than competitors.I am not one to post reviews on the Internet, but Cal’s service several months ago was so extraordinary that I want to give it the public praise it deserves, in addition to my personal compliments to him. After tuning our Baldwin grand piano, Cal mentioned that the the hammers had developed some deep string grooves, and that the piano’s sound could be greatly improved if the hammers were “filed and voiced.” I frankly did not understand what this entailed, but had full trust and confidence in Cal’s evaluation.The bigger problem was that an event was scheduled at our house in two days where piano playing would be featured. Could Cal get the work done in time when he already had a fll schedule. In short he could and he did.Since Cal’s most recent service, several very fine pianists have played our Baldwin piano. All have commented on the marvelous improvement in sound. For my part, not being a pianist myself, I like to sit nearby and thrill to the sparkling notes that Cal restored. Jim charged the double tune rate ($300), which I thought was a great deal as he did an amazing job, was extremely thorough, and detailed.Having Jim into my home (while I was working and joining calls) was very comfortable and enjoyable. He is a great technician as well as talented musician. More importantly, he was extremely professional, timely, responsive, didn't over-promise but also gave great expectations for a big unknown as to what he would find once opening the piano.I highly recommend Jim if you have a piano to be tuned. I was very impressed and appreciative of his services and approach. My piano sounds amazing now and way better than I thought it could!

Jim was a joy to have at my place, and how often can you say that about a service provider? He carefully took everything apart and even more carefully inspected everything in need of repair. He did not rush. As the piano began to be more in tune, beautiful songs began to fill our home. His repair process included an absolutely wonderful and random selection of classic rock hits, bar tunes, and holiday favorites. I couldn’t believe it. When the piano was fully repaired and perfectly tuned, a flurry of improvisational jazz erupted out of nowhere. I joked that he needed a tip jar. Not only will I be using Jim’s service again, the next time I do, I’ll be sure to invite guests! Unbelievable service and value - 10/10.

Angela Predhomme: Jim came to my home to tune an antique baby grand we recently got. He took health/safety precautions (May 2020), and did an excellent job with the tuning. The piano was so out of tune and so old that he had warned it might be more expensive than a regular tuning. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a basic charge, nothing extra. My conclusion: Jim is ethical and will not overcharge. Also, after the tuning, he played some cool 70s tunes on the piano. He was pleasant, professional and fun! I highly recommend him.

I called him about a DIY repair of our 100 yr + old Player Piano that we are trying to fix before giving it away. He had a wealth of knowledge that he willingly shared with me. As he worked, he explained what he was doing and what we needed to do to perseve our piano. I taught for 47 years with Livonia Public Schools and because the music teacher was my friend, I had the opportunity to meet other piano tuners.
