Adam Wright: If you're shopping for mattresses in the Ann Arbor area, Van Winkle is a must stop. The owner Ken is no pressure, no rush. He takes the time to talk with you, get to know you and is sincere in his conversation with you. He wants you to get a mattress that will suit your needs, not what will beef up his bottom line. When I stopped in Ken spent an hour with me, giving me a crash course in mattresses and some general life tips. I ended up not buying a mattress from Van Winkle, but only because Ken didn't carry the brand I was hoping to buy again for an additional bed in our home. Ken had encouraged me that if I was able to find the brand I already had and liked, to get it! If he had that brand in his inventory, it would have been a no-brainer to buy at Van Winkle. But, alas. Anyways, when you stop at Van Winkle, you're rewarded with a generous offering of mattresses and a salesman who in an old school way genuinely wants whats best for you, even if that means he encourages you to shop elsewhere because he doesn't carry that particular brand. Seriously, 5 Stars for Van Winkle! Ann Arbor is lucky to have a mom&pop shop like this with a salesman who's heart is in his profession.

Lauren Pratt: I spent $1200 on a new futon frame and mattress. Within a month, a piece of the frame has broken off -- they're working with me to fix it, but I'm disappointed in the quality; the piece in question should have been solid wood, rather than glued together. Also, I regret my purchase of the memory foam-topped mattress; although the one I tried in the store felt good, after just a few weeks it's become soft and saggy, so you get a lot of pressure points digging in from the frame. (This was the second most expensive mattress they sell.) Bear in mind that they have a no returns or exchanges policy, so caveat emptor. You might end up with something that doesn't meet your expectations, and no recourse.Edit: Upgrading this review from 2 to 4 stars; when they came to fix the arm of the futon frame, they mentioned this review and offered to let me switch to a new mattress; I ended up going with the wool filled version. I appreciate their flexibility; it would be nice if they instituted a real return policy rather than going case-by-case.

They give options case by case depending on your workable price range and provide good descriptions of why the mattress quality differs from each other to best what's most affordable and comfortable for you. Not to mention they offer same day delivery or, in my case, personally move out and strap down the mattress to your car. Truly one of my best retail experiences I've had.

Prices are very reasonable and much of the selection is available for same or next-day delivery. They offer delivery and haul-away of old mattresses for a very reasonable cost. Amy OBrien: What an excellent buying experience. Fierra was both knowledgeable and able to handle multiple customers as they came through the door. We never felt like we were waiting and always felt cared for. Fierra show us three type of bed styles and mattress thicknesses and was patient with all of our questions. In the end, we chose a split i8 mattress and bed frame. We are both so excited!! Thank you!!

Our salesperson (Chris) deserves 5 stars for his excellent knowledge and communication.The company itself on the other hand deserves 0 stars.We ordered and paid for our bed in February. The first delivery was rescheduled ON delivery day, and moved out 3 weeks.Today was that day, and due to a delivery snafu I don't even know when the bed will arrive. I've dismantled my bedroom set twice now, and had heated conversations with customer service.What a terrible company to deal with. Please save yourself the hassle and consider an alternative.

Waited three week for delivery... 5 minutes after the delivery window they called and canceled giving us another delivery date again three weeks out. After numerous phone calls and a threat to cancel we were given a new delivery date in three days. After the delivery time started with no update we called and were told they were 45 minutes out... Sleep number delivery never showed, never called. Were going back to the store to cancel order and request full refund since delivery has never happened...Very disappointed!So now its been another week and know I have yet another offer to call sleep number again and sit on hold For ever to get another ration of excuses of why they can’t do their job and somehow it must be my fault....I have better things to do with my time than continue to be a victim of the sleep number corporate shell game!

Mya Gazdecki: The worker, Trudi, changed my life. Give her a raise. I love her
tomdemerly: Skip the big-box, “membership” “co-op” outdoor discounters and go to The Bivouac. Great staff, strong inventory, authentic product knowledge. This isn’t a national chain store trying to do everything at once and dragging the outdoor industry down with repetitive “SALE!” promotions and persistent nagging to join a social-movement cult. The Bivouac is just good, old-fashioned outdoor retail done right. Big selection of the best brands, great closeout area in the basement, but mostly just a strong staff, solid merchandising and good assortment stocked deep enough so they usually have what you need. The downsides: parking is bad (it’s Ann Arbor), don’t even think about it on game day, and the space is smallish so it’s packed a bit tight and you’ll be climbing some stairs. But I say, worth the effort and a better retail experience than the big outdoor membership, virtue-signaling, cult-like co-op chain stores in the strip malls. Just solid outdoor specialty retail done right.
Leahley Alawi: I went in three separate times to try on and purchase a pair of boots. Every time I was helped by a different employee, and it was clear that none of them had actually been trained to answer questions about the products. I am so frustrated because they all gave me different answers to the same questions, and I still don't feel like my boots fit properly. I will be returning the item and taking my business to birkenstock 4th ave, where they actually are committed to helping their customers find the right products.
Chelsea Parker: Overpriced merchandise and a staff that follows around Black customers. So probably perfect for the typical Ann Arbor resident.The first employee was helpful and showed me some things. Once I went around looking on my own, another employee asked me if I needed help but I said no. I went back to browsing and realized that employee was standing over me the entire time pretending he wasn't watching me. I told the first employee maybe he should tell the other employee not to follow around Black people and he shrugged and said ok like he didn't care. So my first and last time shopping there which is obviously what they want. I can see from previous reviews that Black and Latino folks just need to stay away.

The older woman followed my family around pretending to look at her phone but staring at us over the top of it the whole time. Unprofessional and unacceptable treatment of customers.

Lucy Ma: I used to really like this place back when I was in college but my most recent experience was horrible. I went in casually browsing and ended up buying a white sweater that I thought was really cute. After I got home, I was trying on the sweater and realized that there was a makeup stain on the inside collar, and I know it definitely wasn’t from me since I normally don’t wear makeup. I went back to bivouac the next day and tried to talk to an employee to exchange it for a different one. They told me that I can’t return or exchange it since the sweater had a makeup stain, and when I tried to explain that I bought it that way, they wouldn’t believe me and refused to do an exchange. I then asked if I could get a discount since the item was damaged when I bought it, and they also refused. They basically accused me of lying about the makeup stain and wouldn’t help me at all.Absolutely awful experience. I will never go back to this store. There are other cute stores on campus and everything here is overpriced anyway. Stay away from this place.

Trini Sernas: I had previously always recommended shopping at Bivouac to anyone who needed a good place to find winter gear. However, my most recent visit left me in tears as I walked out of the store, vowing to never return. This was not my first time visiting and shopping at the store but it was the first time I was alone, before my roommate and her family had always gone with me. Almost immediately after arriving, I had an employee walk up to me and ask if I needed any help, I replied with “no, I’m just looking, thank you” but he continued to follow me pretty closely. I attempted to walk around the rack of clothes and find what I was looking for but he kept following me. I am a Latina student at UM so the immediate attitude of watching over me very closely made me feel uncomfortable and racially profiled by the employees. After going to the fitting room another male employee started watching me and asked if I had found everything I was looking for. I again replied with thanks but that I was just getting ready to pay for my items. It might be important to note that my parents were apple paying me the money for the base layers so I was waiting for that to come through. He kept telling me that he could hold my items while the money came through even though I refused many times. He told me that I could just come back tomorrow and they would hold on to my items, but I again refused. I had asked if the store was about to close soon because he gave me the impression he wanted me to get out of the store quickly but he said they closed at 8 pm and this was around 3 pm. It felt as if the employees thought I was going to steal something or I didn’t have enough money to pay for the things in my hands. I quickly walked over to the cashier, who was the only nice person I encountered at the store, paid, and ran out of the store. I will not be coming back here, I was pushed to tears, and made to feel incredibly uncomfortable and less than. I will no longer recommend the store to other students, especially to other POCs who don’t deserve to be treated like this when we spend considerable amounts of money here.

yuwm canadian: Great gear, good price. Coming from a small town I’m used to having to go online to order gear and equipment. They had a great selection of high quality brands like Patagonia, Arcteryx, Cotopaxi, Msr, Thermarest, Sea to Summit, Black Diamond, Osprey, Kuhl, and many more. They had a great selection of products from these brands which was very suprising. In the basement was a clearance section with lots of discounted items. I can’t say much for customer service besides I was there 10 minutes past closure without feeling rushed.

Groovy Jakoovy: When I'm in the area, this is one of those stores I absolutely have to swing by. Usually I'm "just perusing," which typically ends up with me leaving in a new hat and shirt. The selection is incredible, and if you're looking for something a little more thrifty, they have a clearance section downstairs. 10/10, great staff, great place, great wares.
Ryan Schechtman: Bivouac used to be a solid store for outdoorsmen. It's really gone downhill. Locals call it biv-oh-whack.

Criscia Kasem: I’ve been trying to find the right pillow for years with no luck. I googled a place near me that sold pillows and MattressFirm came up. As soon as I walked in I was greeted nicely by Nathan. I explained what I was looking for and the issues I’ve run into. Nathan asked a few questions about how I sleep and the firmness of my mattress. With what I told him and his plethora of knowledge he was able to match the right pillow to fit my personal needs. When I am ready to purchase my next mattress I will for sure be contacting Nathan.
