Jl Sillman: Believe it or not this once proud and beautiful public financed institution is still under covid 19 lockdown. Masks must be worn to enter still. This is unacceptable at this point. This is a very good argument for defunding such institutions as they are no longer really a necessity due to the advent of the internet.

Yonikka Jackson: I really love this library, and always have. The staff is very nice and helpful. The resources are plentiful. The library is very clean and the ambiance is very soothing. The only small issue I've had is not being able to access certain books, although shown available online. Yes, you can use the hold feature but often times you cannot. There are a large number of books available for checkout, somehow lost in a tomb at the library that haven't been found since the COVID -19 pandemic began. I'd really love to see an end to this era. Other than that, nothing but good things to say about all of their lovely resources.

Ollie Lagrou: This was my first visit to the main library. I’m used to libraries being warm, inviting places and found this to be anything but. There are aggressive mask mandate flyers plastered in red all over the front doors, the staff repeatedly had loud group discussions amongst themselves, and bafflingly, the entire second and third floors are closed long term due to “covid” when asked. There were no study rooms, and when we finally did find a place to work, we were told that it wasn’t safe for our computer plug to lay between our table and the wall for “tripping hazard safety” despite that we were literally the only people in the room. Security patrols the area acting as mask police while staff were observed without masks on multiple times. My kids and I all felt as though the presence of patrons (not just us) was resented. Overall, two stars because the building is beautiful but otherwise a one-star experience. We love the friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere of Jefferson branch and will definitely be heading there next time. I don’t often write reviews but the atmosphere here is just awful, and in total contrast to other branches.

Michele Artist: Alot of places has changed since the pandemic and this is one of them. Never really crowded which is a plus but it feels unnatural. The entire second floor is not accessible to the public, or atleast it wasn't when I last visited. In someways the Main Libary has turned into a museum.

That staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, and they engaged with my 6 year old the entire time. They had a great children's collection as well as a lot of different activities for the children to do. Highly recommend.

Cameron: Hasn’t been open in a while. Hardy a public library given that fact.Edit: three months later and it’s still not openA year ago someone left a five star review waiting for it to reopen.
realbc7: Skillman is a beautiful library both inside and out. This Detroit diamond from the early 20th century, when open is a walk through the past and still serves the local population with books, media and more. Check the schedule as hours have varied if late. Lastly the surrounding landscape is a nice bit of green in the urban core of downtown.

JOHN HALL: This is a great place to go online in their media section, located in the old "newspaper room", with it's own entrance through the old revolving door.This library is also the home of the largest automotive related reading material.You need a reservation to view the collection.
Alfred Brock: This is for the Skillman Branch of the Detroit Public Library.There is a small park at the head of the library. It is pleasant to look at and shady. There is no seating in there. It hasn't stopped homeless people from using it to sleep and rest in.The library was built in the 1920's. It is a great looking building They have a 'Newspaper Room' that is accessed by a revolving door. Lots of fun. The interior is decorated in a style from the 1920's that is very interesting if you are interested in period pieces. There is an original water fountain there that still operates.The staff is very attentive, kind and knowledgeable. Be aware when visiting. It's a big city and this is a public space.It's worth the visit. Don't miss it.Emblazoned on one wall is :"Religion, morality and knowledge, being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged."- Ordinance for the Government of the Northwest Territory

P J: Everybody here was great the staff and the security guard. The only problem I had was with the guy that cleans the bathrooms. He wouldn’t let my child go into the bathroom with me despite the fact that my child is considered disabled by the federal government. However, the bathrooms were very clean. If a parent is trying to take their child into the bathroom they should be allow too. It took everything I had not to flip out on him. He lucky I’m working on my attitude and I’m in another city and state. What a way to start off my vacation.

Miss Faith: Disclaimer: the STAFF is very friendly. I have never once had a problem there.But whoever is in charge of the upkeep of that place is doing a HORRIBLE job. Me and my sons caregiver took my kids there to read last summer and a woman pointed out a dead mouse in the middle of the floor under the reading table! Thank God this woman saw it because my son was on the floor playing INCHES away from it. That definitely would have been a lawsuit if my son grabbed it. Secondly, I used the restroom once and there was no soap, smelled like old bleach and there was sticky stuff on the door handle...there should be someone checking the place every hour. They have so much traffic coming through there.

Alfred Brock: I appreciated visiting the Detroit Public Library Douglass Branch Library for Specialized Services located at 3666 Grand River Avenue in Detroit.  Their hours are convenient to me.  The security guard was welcoming to me and I felt protected while there.  It is a very orderly environment.  The staff were kind to me as well and afforded me the occasional smile and lots of useful information.It is very easy to get to this particular branch and there is plenty of parking right across the street.  In the building they have a large bank of computers for patrons to use.  It is very easy to access the computer systems whether you have a library card or not.  I had to have my card renewed and the staff was very accommodating in helping me do that.There is really no reading material that I could see.  The library specializes in special services and offers a mobile library based from the building as well.  They have an interesting small museum regarding the specialized tools they have and have had for those with various reading difficulties including talking books, large print books, magnifying glasses and other things.  I will need to return to explore more of this interesting branch.There is a beautiful mural of Frederick Douglass at the entry behind the security desk.

Robert Myers: Researchers should be aware that the Burton limits your time to two hours. If this policy is on the website, I can't find it. Needless to say, this is insufficient for any research project that involves anything more than a quick look at a collection. Having driven nearly two hours to do research, this was frustrating to say the least.

Todd Scott: It's a phenomenal source for historical research. It's a bit old school with the massive card catalogs but staff has been very helpful in giving tips on how to use the system.
Dazey Christi: I visited the Burton Library during 2004. I am from Minnesota. I accessed the large dictionary firstly then the books found me that wanted me to look at them.I opened some serious kick ass on a Hebrew book and found a page that is surely a good idea for exercise. I saw the Hebrew on the hands drawing and I see there is a Hebrew symbol for each section of the hand. Each of the 28 sections of the /fingers/thumbs. So because I can't read Hebrew yet I now do the exercise to touch all of those sections when I do remember each time. 28. Just like thinking to yourself is what exercise is.
Donna Hitz: Second visit. Don't waste your time. It isn't that the info you seek isn't there, it's getting help in finding it that is at issue. Many of the items in the collection are protected and that is a good thing. I don't think that you are expected to know and understand all of that. What you are expected to know is the redheaded middle-aged woman with a mouth like a lamprey is NOT going to help you. There were possibly three patrons in the whole of the Burton Collection on this day so they weren't too busy to help. Most of the employees in a sitting position would like to stay that way. Maybe the state budget decision makers visited before they withdrew millions in funding. I have been in libraries where the librarians and clerks offered ideas and other ways to get to what you seek without being asked. This woman won't even tell you if you ask. It's almost like a game of what do I need to do to get this person to help me. Is there a secret word or something besides please. God knows I was polite. I won't be going there again.

Ganj Beebani: Such a great resource despite the (relatively) small space. They can practically order any book physically or electronically. They also have the section of “library of things” which includes anything from backyard and home entertainment, basic house tools, musical instruments, and a bunch more. They have a seed exchange section where you can stop by and pick up seeds to start your garden.The kids section is super fun and our two kids love to come here to play or read in their little nook. Finally, they have enough rooms and quiet areas to suit anyone’s need.
MarkaPhotog: Excellent and beautiful library. I went here last week for a presentation and fell in love with this library. There is a small store with books, DVDs and shirts for sale. There are comfortable seats to relax and read in. An area with a fireplace as well as a teen section. Area out front for people to use laptops and plug them in. I really can’t recommend this library enough.
