Grand Rapids Police Department: what do users think?
Barbara Carr: Excellent communication and knowledge from all responding officers.
Jac: They don’t care at all :( wish they actually responded when people call for help
Matt Lovley: Honestly. 1 officer "tripped and fell"and almost shot a kid. 1 smh 1 "thought he heard a shot" when a pole cracked and almost shot the accident victim. And 1 shot someone in the back of the head for bad plates. Welcome to grand rapids
Lil Willie: I had to wait for hours for an officer to arrive after a car accident
chris cutting: It's evident that their budget has been cut to the point where there aren't enough officers, but tonight reminded me that there is still much room for improvement. Even when laws are being broken by people who are still on scene (four blocks from GRPD headquarters), they get upset when you report it, as was demonstrated tonight. We called because someone left their dog inside a car with the windows rolled up that was sitting in the sun for more than an hour on an 86 degree day. Dispatch said officers weren't going to do anything about it, and the person on the phone was clearly agitated that we called.Though the officers that respond to calls are friendly and are clearly stretched thin, there have been countless other instances where we've been pretty let down. It tends to always be on the back end of things. As a manager of a restaurant downtown, we've had to call for assistance on a regular basis. Once we called because an employee pulled a kitchen knife on another employee, and after multiple calls, nothing ever happened. We were told weeks later that an intern messed up when taking the call. Thank God we have staff trained to be able to handle things on our own. When police do respond and we say we'd like to press charges, we are told that they cannot help us with this, and that we must call and speak with a detective the following day to ensure this happens. It's common for us to not be able to get through to actually speak with someone directly. The vast majority of legitimate issues we call GRPD about result in no sufficient results. Adding to this are the consistent untimely response times. Officers have told us that they aren't able to respond because there's a more significant issue. We've even had officers leave our site mid conversation due to this and leave us hanging. There clearly needs to be more officers on the daily roster, but I believe the bigger issue is the organization of the department, and the training and structure on the back end. It's clearly setup in a way that prevents justice from occurring at the expense of the citizens who have to deal with the consequences. We have a list of unresolved case numbers that we wrote to the city manager about even. Only one of those cases panned out with prosecution, in which someone kicked our door in. Despite damage to our building and the assurance from them that we'd be compensated after the fact, we never received stated compensation. After a previous meeting with the captain that went well, I still believe we're on our own much of the time. I don't believe it's the captain's fault. It's the structure of the entire GRPD mixed with not having the resources available to create the change that's needed to be able to follow through and ensure that the citizens and businesses in Grand Rapids can, in fact, depend on our local police department to keep us safe.If you think defunding the police is a solution, you're clearly not in tune with the reality of how things operate. However, something needs to drastically change to ensure the citizens of Grand Rapids can have a safe city to live in.
jada reahm: Our officers are consistently showing that they think they’re above that law and that needs to end
Cameron: Sargent Albert was very patient and very helpful.
Derrick D. Simmons Sr.: Two years later and still no police presence and the News says it's because they have no gas. War Vet with no record and I think I need to buy some Police protection myself because all I see you doing is getting coffee and talking about nothing.
Lauren Tara: I don't trust any of these police officers.
rolly knevels: Still stinks of above the law folks.
Brandon Schleh: Poor choice in officers.
Rhonda Love: Car was in accident. Police were quick to respond and handled incident very well. Thank you!
Natural Earth: My special needs child has been abused by a perp whom I know. Getting functional help on this topic is difficult especially when my child can become non-verbal when extremly frustrated. I appreciate that the nice officer named "Zane" came and took a report, he trouble shooted questioning me about details and it had finally dawned upon me how to get the missing puzzle piece. This is important that I get an updated medical evaluation from her specialized medical provider - not the regular family doctor.
Erin Reynolds: I support the men and women of the GRPD!!!!They are always there for us when we need them!! Thank you GRPD!!!
James Haaksma: Thank you for your service! You all are incredibly well-trained and professional. We are blessed as a city to have the police force we do!
Shirley Goodspeed: They always help out when u need them
Kristana Beard: I have yet to have any problems with our Grand Rapids Police. In all my years of living in Grand Rapids the G.R police department is fast to respond and very thorough with questioning and fallowing up. Thank you Grand Rapids Police for putting your life on the line to protect victims and serving your communities by making our our neighborhoods safer and better. Thank you for your Service!
Lab The3rd: I had lost my keys so I checked to see if they were at the police department. While they were not there, they actually took the time to check their records for any items of that description while being very friendly. 5-Stars for sure!
jolimano: It should go without saying, but this is based on only my personal experience with GRPD. I called the non-emergency line to report my stolen wallet. I spoke to two different officers, and they were both helpful and professional. The first gentleman especially, and he was very willing to help me with my issue. Honestly, for something this small, I was cynical about being taken seriously but I can say with appreciation that I was wrong.
Austin Reinart: Saved me from my brother who tried to kill me literally thank u so much
Jody Deems-McCargar: Very responsive and surprisingly fast at getting to our house in light of of how many calls they must receive every morning. Very courteous and professional officers on the phone and in person.
