Dawn Waalkes: 23 years ago Hearthcrest added a gas fireplace to a home we were renovating in East Grand Rapids. They did a beautiful job building the framework and making it look as if it had been there all along. We were very happy with them. Fast forward to 2019 and we once again went to Hearthcrest for our fireplace needs. This time we were renovating a condo that didn’t allow gas appliances, so we purchased the most realistic electric fireplace we could find—a Dimplex Opti-myst Pro 1000. It was installed in May of 2019 and we were very happy with it—until it stopped working in December of 2021. Barely 2.5 years after we purchased it and paid over $3,000 for it. This is when we learned from Karen, the manager, that Hearthcrest does not service the electric fireplaces they sell. Shame on us for assuming that a business would service what they sell. Karen tried to help by contacting the manufacturer but parts were on order for months (during Covid) and we never received them. We continued to communicate with Dimplex until finally in March of 2023 we received the replacement parts we needed and my husband installed them. After 16 months with a non-working box in the wall, we have a working fireplace again. Needless to say an extremely frustrating experience all around. I give them a 3 because of 1 positive experience 23 years ago. Expensive lesson learned on our part. (I should also add that the staff at the Byron Center location was less than helpful. We mentioned it to Karen and she seemed to appreciate the feedback and said she would address.)
Linda Goulet: Sales associate not wearing a mask over her nose when we went there today (12/30/20). I asked her to put it above her nose, and she said "I'm fine". I indicated if she was unable to pull her mask up to protect us, we'd have to leave. She said "I can't breath with it up", so we left. While I always try to buy local, I ended up going home and buying one online at Crate and Barrel. Thank you for the response. Much appreciated, Karen.
Matthew Borgula: We've had two fireplaces converted from wood to gas by Hearthcrest. The fireplaces work great and the customer service was top-notch. A couple of years after we had the fireplaces installed, one of them would not ignite. Hearthcrest came out and provided replacement parts free of charge. Highly recommend.

Tom Powell: Would not recommend dealing with this company. I left three messages for Ken about an install and he never called me back. Then the office called and said the install would be to difficult for them. I contacted a local competitor and they had two beautiful fireplaces installed within a week.

Eric Soya: Went in a few weeks ago to look at fireplaces. No sign on the door about masks but we wore them out of safety concerns (and because it's the law, duh!). Neither employe was masked nor did they make any effort to put a mask on. The guy came over and talked to us, the whole time hovering about 4 feet away and never wearing a mask. We left pretty quickly and went to Hearthcrest Fireplace where as soon as we walked in, the employee masked up. Needless to say, they got our business instead.
Steven R: I recently had a gas insert fireplace installed by Larry Kett and his team. Their showroom has a large selection to choose from and Larry was very helpful in both explaining our options, as well as just generally educating us about gas insert fireplaces. He was extremely knowledgable, prompt with his email and phone responses, and just seemed like good people. We've had our gas insert for a couple weeks now and absolutely love it, makes the winter much more tolerable. Thanks Larry and the Kett's Hearth and Home team!

Last year when we called to have our two gas fireplaces checked for safety we were told it would be on a basis of whether they were "in the area." Again, very dismissive. This year we called to ask if they could show us again how to safely turn on the pilots, no service check or Anything els needed. AGain, they would let us know if they were "in the neighborhood". FInally the service tech showed up, lit both fireplace pilots and 15 minutes and $175 later was out the door. No safety check or any cleaning, nothing. I called Larry Kett to question this and his attitude was one of absolute disconcern. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY WHATSEVER. WE ARE BUILDING A NEW HOUSE NEXT YEAR AND WILL BE USING ANOTHER HIGHLY R GARDED COMPANY IN GRAND RAPIDS. THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN NICER.

Eve Johnson: Larry worked with me to convert my client's wood burning stove, that had previously been converted from a wood burning fireplace, to a gas insert fireplace. In spite of being in the middle of a move, Ketts was able to efficiently provide quality service from measurements, to my sketches to completion. Larry continued to provide great customer services when we had questions and when we had "operator error" issues with the remote control. I will continue to work with Ketts Hearth and Home in the future and recommend them to my clients and colleagues.Johnson Designs LLC
Jeremy Daugherty: There is a part selection of gas fireplaces at this location. They can make custom screens for wood fireplaces. Unfortunately the staff is aloof most of the time. Don't know if this is purposeful or if it is a symptom of being understaffed.

Douglas T.: Bought a fireplace from them and installed in March 2020. Not sure when it actually quit working but here in Oct 2022 it will not ignite. Probably a junk valve but more so, I called a few times and even left a message and no return call. I have only turned this fireplace on a dozen times at most. So longevity is not so long and once you're sold a product, you're forgotten about.
Elizabeth Bombara: Great selection and knowledgeable sales staff. Unlike other locations the men and women at the store want to help you find what you need rather than make a sale. No pressure shopping. Definitely going back for all our needs.
David/Carol Stockwell: Very busy as far as getting work done on gas fireplace. The rate for service work is $149.00 for the first 30 mins. of service. Kinda high don't you think.Had work done a 5/18 /2020. That bill was $407.00. I just think the charges are out of line. Next Fireplace will be some other place. David Stockwell

It also involved design and build of a new fireplace surround and mantle inside our home, managed by our builder. Timothy Wood: If you can purchase fireplace equipment anywhere else, do so. The lack of customer service is astounding as well as the installation charges I was not made aware of. I ordered a gas log fireplace set with glass doors in the fall of 2022 and they completed the installation this spring just in time for warm weather. The gas log set was available, but according to the Flame Center they have to wait until the glass doors arrive so they can make one installation trip. The doors were on back order. I asked to have the logs and gas installed and they said NO, it's not our policy saying, we have to wait for the doors to arrive. Subsequently no fireplace all winter. It's a backwoods organization with no idea about customer service, so go elsewhere.

Stacy Koslek: Great showroom to purchase a machine. Just be sure to have a back up plan for service. These machines will need service regularly, and the flame center is unable to meet service demands for the machines they sell in a timely manner. Its dec 1st- my pellet stove wont ignite- flame center can be out in 10 weeks- um, that's spring. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a pellet stove for heat in the winter. The seceratay who answers the phones is less than helpful or polite.
Tony Lyons: Tried having my fireplace face updated. And after speaking with a rep from the flame center I was told it could be done. After nearly 2 months and days before this was suppose to happen. I was told that it cannot be refaced and I would have to buy a new fireplace insert at the cost of 8,000 dollars. Why did this take 2 months to tell me after I repeatedly asked if everything was on track. With a response of yes. I will never do business with this place.

VJ VB: I bought an old house that had a poorly and improperly constructed fireplace. I had Cherry Valley install a wood-burning fireplace insert last spring. Through a miscommunication, my modification to the fireplace was not aesthetically pleasing. Adam not only had a great solution, but he ate the cost. I did not use the stove for six months, but when I did, it smoked up the house terribly. I called Adam and he personally was here in half an hour. He went over everything and determined it was installed correctly, and that there was nothing wrong with the stove. He did more research on his own and found a solution that cost me nothing and completely solved the problem. I plan to have him put in a free-standing wood-burning stove in my shop next. A wood-burning stove is a costly investment and, if done wrong, can be dangerous. I wouldn't go anywhere else.Updated - Adam came out and installed added length of flue "just to make sure" on my chimney. It made an additional improvement in the quality of the air in the house. He charged me for the materials but not for the labor, saying their goal is customer satisfaction, and he was not satisfied with the previous results. Fantastic!
