KSK Martial Arts: what do users think?
Maria and Sofia's Missions!!: KSK is very enjoyable class. My girls don't wanna miss any session... the instructors are very friendly
Matthew Grieshop: My son and I have been training in the Arnis weapons program for a few months. I trained in a variety of arts in my 20s and early 30s and am having a blast! IMO kali is an immediately applicable art, its foundation emphasizes simple body mechanics applied to non specific weapons and open hand techniques. The bonus has been the time I spend with my 17 year old son. The instructors and students are truly welcoming. Guru Kent is an outstanding instructor and is great at motivating focus and has fostered a fun and inclusive environment.
Bryson Maddick: Positive:Communication,QualityGreat atmosphere with an outstanding insructor and staff! I did a trial session and immediately signed up for a 12-month membership. Highly recommend 👍
Nicole Allen: My son has been a student here for several months and LOVES it (in the Little Ninjas program). The staff is great, very friendly. Instructions during class are well structured and organized, as well as appropriate for and geared towards youth learners. If you are looking for a high-quality, high-energy atmosphere for your kid(s) to learn MMA, or get exercise, learn discipline, respect, self-defense and confidence - all at an affordable rate - this is the place.
John Ward: Beyond impressed and happy with KSK. I've been sending my 9 year old there for the past month and couldn't be happier. If you're looking for a school where your kid(s) is going to be treated like a special/delicate flower and the focus is on memorizing katas to "earn" the next belt, then this isn't the place for you or your child. However, if you're wanting a MA school that instills discipline, life lessons, rewards and recognizes hard work, all while learning unarmed combatives - then this 110% is the place to go. Only regret I have is not starting my son sooner.
Jose Sanchez: I practiced in KSK a few years ago.RECOMMENDATION: Do not subscribe for a year. If you are really interested in the school, try the classes at least for 2 good months before making longer commitments.THE GOOD: They have a diverse curriculum, the owner has good technique and knows his stuff. This is not a McDojo.MY BAD EXPERIENCE: I committed the mistake of registering for 1 year. Soon after my registration I started a Masters degree and was not able to attend the classes anymore. The owner didnt accept to cancel my subscription. The school had the option of private lessons, so I asked to get private lessons for the money I was paying, but he didn't accept. neither He was OK in just taking my money without offering other option in exchange. Also, I paid for shorts as part of the subscription but were never delivered. The classes of the program I registered to were not enough to call it a work out, the instructor said that you can get a workout by your own, and is true, but, I mean, this is martial arts! I expect any MA class to be the best workout; so if you are looking for a MA school that can also help you to get in shape, this may not be what you are looking for, unless you register for several hours per day or have time to workout by yourself. You will see really cool performances, keep in mind those may be just choreographies.
Benjamin.eichler Eichler: Well-thought-out and well-planned. It's wonderful to work with an educator that puts in the time to focus on details
Eric Cullimore: Great owner and instructors! Excellent place to train.
Sally Dettmer: The new location is looking great. Looking forward to becoming a student there
Steve Peto: Excellent instruction and great friendly atmosphere. High quality martial arts in the Lansing area, providing strong development in skills, self confidence and respect for yourself and others.
David Overley: The instruction is good...and you can learn to defend yourself if you work hard. The people and atmosphere can be a little intimidating, as it can be a bit of a social clique. However, they are typically warm and welcoming to newcomers.Rising in the Ranks can be weird, as there is no traditional "Testings" just evaluations from the instructors to decide when they think you are ready to get moved up. Unfortunately those evaluations can come in the form of "Private lessons" with an instructor, and those can cost nearly as much as your monthly tuition. That said, The monthly prices are not terrible, however the 3 hour class schedule can daunting and hard to manage for busy people. Many pick and choose what they want to focus on, and just do those hours.I was here for over three years...learned some great application level knowledge to expand my martial arts.If you stay out of the social circle and focus on that martial arts, you will learn.Go for the martial arts, and stay for the martial arts.
Ed Spamjunk: My 12 & 13 year old's go to KSK.. They already had a lot of martial arts experience before they joined KSK. After they did their KSK trial, they asked me to buy it for them. When I asked why? They said the KSK teaches them to fight, they get to fight with actual resisting opponents. When you learn from Guro T.K. Nelson, there is no fluff. He teaches you to fight. It's all very useful, and they make the lessons a lot of fun! This place is great. Call them for a free trial class. It's free fun..:)
Andrew Barnes: I've been training at KSK for a little under three years (update, four years now) and I love it there. The teaching style is relaxed and supportive. I felt welcomed from day 1.At the school you can train in Kali (a Filipino weapons system), Kai-Shin Jeet Kune Do, and BJJ. The wide variety of techniques and approaches can be overwhelming at times. However, Kent Nelson breaks the material down into easily understood concepts, and then teaches how to apply them in both traditional and non traditional situations (ex. Using hand trapping as part of your grappling game). To summarize, I would recommend KSK Martial arts for the following reasons1. Excellent instruction2. Exposure to multiple styles, and learn how to combine in the that best suits you3. It's fun. The laid back atmosphere and friendly people.
Katie Hammond: Great place to try martial arts or to continue. Everyone is so willing to teach and Guro Kent is a fantastic instructor. Also, it's an excellent workout!
gayam sandeep reddy: They are not refunding my money. I have called them about 3 times now and every time the receptionist answers and informs that they can’t talk at the moment and will give a call back. The call back never came.
bonnie britt: I found KSK because I wanted to learn self defense. I wanted to have confidence in my ability to defend myself. From the moment I walked into KSK I felt welcomed and safe! I have been at KSK for about a year now and I have never felt unsafe while training. It was never my plan to be here this long, I just wanted to learn a few self defense moves and then be on my way. But life has a way of turning your course and I found myself not only loving the training, but becoming a part of a new family. I have never been made fun of or put down if I am not at a set level or if I am struggling with a new skill. The instructors are patient and help you fit the new skill to your abilities. One of the things I love the most about KSK is that everyone there really and truly cares for one another. Guro Kent has been amazing and cares about you as a person and not just when you step onto the mats. Whether you want to train in martial arts, improve your health, or just want to learn to defend yourself, the KSK family is waiting for you!
Mei Bresnahan: Great martial arts school. The instructors are friendly and knowledgeable. They teach fighting styles and techniques in great depth, while also connecting different elements together. Students also learn the advantages and disadvantages of various moves, and how to adapt to the situation. Lessons can be large, but guru Kent is able to maintain high quality instruction and offer multiple levels of instruction at a time. Finally, the school has a welcoming atmosphere and utilizes safe practice methods. It IS possible to learn without breaking bones!PS teach has a swag beard
Kenneth Schafer: I have worked as an LEO for approximately 1 year. During the academy, I began considering martial arts. As I graduated the academy, I knew it was time to choose a school. KSK stuck out because of Guru Kent's work with the Michigan Sheriff's Association. I decided to try KSK and knew I made the right decision when I took my trial class.Guru Kent is very knowledgeable and passionate in his trade. The classes are well planned and they are fun. Guru Kent has several associate instructors, so there is never a time where we do not have someone at the school to teach class.Guru Kent teaches five main areas in class, striking, clinching, trapping, manipulation and grappling. While all five are important, I can recall several times where clinching has been a necessity in my field. Without my training at KSK, I would not have known how to react when the opportunity presented itself.I would recommend this school to anyone, LEO or civilian.
Lexie Roberts: I have trained at KSK Martial Arts for a number of years. Even though as a young woman I was often in the minority (most of the members are men), I always felt very welcome and safe. Everyone who trains at KSK is welcoming and supportive of each other member. Guro Kent, the main instructor at KSK, especially makes sure all members and visitors alike feel welcome, learn real, applicable self-defense techniques, and have a great time. I would definitely recommend this training studio to anyone looking to learn real self-defense techniques or just meet some truly awesome and fun people. The only reason I don't train here anymore is because I moved away to college!
Russell Kranz: My kid has been going to KSK for four years now. He has grown and enjoys going to class every week. KSK is a great atmosphere and helps build self confidence.
Gus Davidsen: KSK is a welcoming and positive environment to train martial arts regardless of age, skill level or your particular goals. Guro Kent has created a truly awesome curriculum that is not only valuable but fun. The instructor staff is knowledgeable and speculatively have lifetimes of cumulative experience, a couple might be wizards. The best part is the people you get to train with, a great group who are gonna get better by making you better and keeping things safe. Come....Train with me.
