On Sunday there was a down pour and are pump outside that keeps are backdoor from flooding got clogged and before i knew it I was in a lot of water and needed to buy a backup pump like yesterday. So I flew over to the Grand River TSC and got a pump.....I was very rude to the cashier mainly because I was completely soaked after laying in the rain trying to get are pump unclogged and I didn't want to wait on the customer in front of me but the young gentleman at the cash register was super nice and remained calm like a perfect gentleman. Next time I'm not in a hurry I'm tipping this guy he was the best cashier you could have and TSC you should give that guy a raise.

Yesterday one was actually rude on a return and nothing was out of order. I have only visited this Menards so cant speak for other stores and I rarely ask for assistance but if I do Id like to be treated pleasantly.

John Kinsora: After I spent 10 minutes looking for an item to no avail I decided to find an employee for some assistance. I came across a group of four employees having a rather inappropriate conversation and politely asked if they could point me in the right direction. Three of them we’re clueless but the fourth who was as pleasant as a rattlesnake simply pointed down an isle saying go that way it should be by the end then turned and continued with their conversation. I was a slightly annoyed by the lack of customer service but it was the last item I needed so I went to checkout. I purchased around $600 worth of building supplies and as I was leaving the store asset protection stopped me and accused me of stealing a $12 dollar pair of reading glasses I’d been using to read labels since I had forgotten mine. I understand this is their job and as a former police officer I’ve handled plenty of calls for retail theft and if he had conducted himself properly it wouldn’t have been an issue. But instead he decided to be rude, arrogant and condescending letting his little plastic asset protection id inflate his ego. After a brief argument that continued even after I made it obviously clear I hadn’t taken anything he finally realized it was time to shut his mouth and walk away, I was so annoyed by the overall experience I nearly returned everything and wish I had.

Regrettably, the product I purchased was found to be defective due to a manufacturing issue, rendering it inoperable. Despite having purchased a warranty, the establishment in question refused to honor their commitment and provide the necessary recourse, citing the unavailability of the product in question.This grossly unfair treatment was not a one-off occurrence, as a subsequent purchase of a chainsaw also proved to be similarly problematic. In this instance, the chainsaw failed to start even after an employee's intervention, yet the establishment was once again reluctant to provide the promised refund. It was only through persistent and arduous negotiation that I was able to secure the due compensation for both incidents.It is deeply concerning that the establishment's business practices have led to such distressing outcomes, which can only be described as a form of daylight robbery. However, as a tenacious and determined individual, I remained resolute in my pursuit of justice, and was able to reclaim what was rightfully mine.

John Customer: From the start, the person responsible for getting my lumber was yelling at me, nasty and belligerent. Then I told him the counter guy said I could pick out my own lumber and he got even more irate and yelled "who said you could" and walked over to the lumber building and called the desk. Then the same guy screamed at me from the lumber building "Come ON!" I told him he had poor customer skills and I could get a refund and go somewhere else if he wanted, and he yelled "GO AHEAD!" and screamed to follow him inside. Someone went to get the mgr who just made things worse. The mgr. continued to glare at me, so, I know he didn't care about me no matter what words came out of his mouth. Seemed like everyone there had an attitude of some kind. So-- If you like to be abused for spending your hard earned cash-- this is the place to go--! It was worse than I can relate and no matter what anyone at Carter might say, I did -absolutely nothing- to be treated that way. I had/gave them no bad attitude. I treated no one badly until I was treated that way. Once I demanded my money back and saw that the mgr wasn't really going to do anything, I gave them some of their own medicine and I was nasty back. Won't apologize for that. Mgr was Josh Smithers. The belligerent guy wouldn't give me his name. I am a professional employee, but, had on a ball cap, old clothes, disheveled hair. Wonder if I would be treated the same if I wore my suit in there? I contacted the C.E.O. of Carter Lumber and several other executives and left recorded messages for them about what happened. They did not call me back, but, the next day Josh Smithers, the Mgr., sure did. He apologized profusely and offered me for free, the items I was to buy and offered to deliver them to my home. Unfortunately, he was still defending the employee as a "good employee who worked there for 20 years." That wasn't what I wanted to hear. I wanted to hear that the employee would be counseled that the way he treated me was inappropriate and would not be tolerated. So, I will not go back to Carter Lumber or accept their freebies. If customers continue to patronize businesses that treat them this way, expect it to get worse. Executives: If this happened to me, you can bet it has happened to other customers. A person at Glazers Lumber (just down the street from Carter) said he has been getting customers from Carter for over 25 years due to poor treatment and service. My advice is to never buy from a business that treats you in a undignified manner. Let your money and continued patronage go to other business' who appreciate you. To address James Rockon's comments: (Really, you are going with that name? Hard to take you seriously with a name like Rockon and very original too). I assume that someone put you up to your review (a friend of, relative of, or for favors from Josh Smithers perhaps, or another employee?) as my review was the only one for Carter Lumber prior to yours, and yours addresses me directly. I am glad they treated you well, as I have heard lots of accounts of bad treatment of customers at that location. Carter should be ashamed of the blatantly awful treatment I received. The CEO and other management that I contacted at Carter Lumber made no excuses for people who evidently do not appreciate their own jobs (chasing away customers is not a normal model for business success). I imagine if Carter Lumber employees yelled at you for no reason other than try to ruin your day, you would have reviewed Carter much the same as I did. I have been to that location numerous times before, mainly for proximity reasons. For the most part I have never received any service that had any sense of urgency, friendliness, helpfulness, or made me want to go back. And, oh yea, yelling or not, "the truth has no boundaries" and I imagine the executives at Carter Lumber are not so easily mislead. I hope these unprofessional events are discussed with Mr. Smithers at his next performance appraisal, as well as his "good 20 year employee's."

James Rockon: Hugh G. Rection?... With a name like that, nobody is going to take your review seriously. Personally, I've only had great experiences at Carter, and I recommend them very highly. Excellent products and a very knowledgeable staff that go out of their way to help. Some people may feel uncomfortable at lumber yards because they feel pressured to know things, or to act like they know things. Well at Carter they treat you with respect, and if you don't have a clue with things such as measurements on your project for example, don't be afraid to ask what you might think are stupid or humiliating questions. They will literally go out of their way to help you, and if the person you are talking to can't help, they will get someone who can very quickly. I was personally amazed at the knowledge of the staff at Carter and for that they get 5 stars....This is no Big Box store where the staff has absolutely no clue. I was once at that orange colored big box store I asked a lumber associate where the 4x6x8 treated are located and he had no clue what I was talking about. How do you work in a lumber dept and not know what a 4x6 is?!? The men and women at Carter know their stuff and you can pretty much throw anything at them and they will know whats up. Prices are sometimes a tad on the high side, but you get what you pay for and so no complaints on that.. Oh and nobody is yelling.

I am in contact with them daily, whether it's getting updates on product delivery or ordering for the next job. Their customer service and their products speak for themselves when it comes to quality and reliability. I recommend MBS of Lansing if you need any building products, whether you are looking for your next entry door, a new roof, or a house full of windows, they will take care of you. 10/10!!!

Wolfgang Brinks: This is the place to get building materials for exterior work. I have worked with other suppliers in the area and have consistently had problems with communication and getting deliveries on time. Since I started getting supplies from MBS, I don't have those problems. Corey communicates well, orders the materials I need and sets up delivery for me. He has also helped with trouble shooting difficult jobs. The only down side, is the selection is more limited here than it is at other places. I personally prefer to have great service so I can focus on running the project instead of chasing where my materials went. The limited selection is a much smaller problem than the lack of service that I get from other suppliers.

Dain Schneider: We at Hubble Construction cannot say enough about Tim Ross and his team over at MBS. For over a year we have used them for all of our exterior projects and they have come through big time. Squeezing us into delivery schedules, tracking down material other suppliers can't provide, and providing pricing no other vendors can beat. Every single member of the team at MBS has come through for us with kind and quick service!

John Haight: I ordered siding, soffit and fascia for a new construction project, was told it’s in stock and they would hold it for me. When I called to get it delivered they said they didn’t have it and sold it. Over $7500.00 dollar order and they did not hold it as promised. I will not be ordering any materials from MBS in the future I will use other vendors. Terrible business practices especially since we order thousands of dollars in materials from them each year. I would not trust what you are told!!

Nancy Croze: I contacted Modern Builders Supply in my quest for discontinued composite deck boards. The distributor in my area of N. Michigan didn’t have any left, thus I was searching far and wide through other suppliers and distributors. My first phone call to MBS was taken by Travis Schafer, and I knew instantly that he would do whatever he could to help me secure these materials. Travis confirmed that their distributor in Ohio had what I needed; he promptly sent me a quote and ordered them just as soon as I gave him the go-ahead. The cost was even less than what I had paid the previous year through the distributor in my area, much to my surprise and delight! He kept me apprised every step of the way as to ETA, inspected the shipment when it arrived, ordered replacement boards for me after noticing that a few were damaged in transit, and confirmed their arrival so I could arrange to travel to Lansing to pick up the order. He even helped fashion a cutting station behind their warehouse so we could cut the boards into manageable lengths for transit. Every single contact with Travis, and there were many, was pleasant as professional. I will likely be a one-time customer given that I live in N Michigan; nevertheless they treated me like a VIP and I could not be more appreciative. Thank you Travis and MBS for a job well done!

Nikki Gubry: Please do not BUY anything Craftsman. Bought a Craftsman power washer December 2022, for my husband for Christmas. Of course it was winter here in Michigan. My husband opened and assembled the power washer early April and tried to start it end of April. The machine won't even spark up. Can't get through to a live person at Craftsman. And the only advice Lowe's could give was to contact Craftsman. This was Lowe's in Lansing, Michigan. Will definitely not shop with them for having terrible customer service. Should have known better than to buy anything Craftsman, but this is what a friend recommended.Not sure who from Lowe's posted the response back. No one at the 1-800 number even knew where to send my call to. What a joke. I am now even more furious. DO NOT BUY CRAFTSMAN. There is a reason Sears went out of business. Their product is junk. Will still not shop at Lowe's again. Would not have had this issue at Home Depot. Should have known.

Susan Berquist: We first went to Lowes South Lansing to get a concrete bird bath. Online info said they had some in stock. But they didn't and never did (?!). The clerk directed us to Lowes West Lansing, a 15 minute drive away. We went and success! So the five stars are for Lowes West Lansing. One star for their online presence.

Wendie Karpinski: I called this evening to find out whether Home Depot carried Kentucky Blue Grass Seed with fine fescue. Brandon, Lawn and Garden Department, took my call. He was very helpful and knowledgeable about the Scott’s brand that you carry.We discussed germination rates and the use of straw versus the grass mat to hold and protect the seed.I also inquired about the availability of some metal stakes to hold down a very large, heavy-duty tarp that I am using to cover up a section of our garden to keep weeds from growing. I am downsizing the garden and will be planting grass there eventually. Brandon was able to tell me what kind of stakes he had (plastic and metal) and where they were located.I thanked him for his courteous assistance and advice. I also asked to speak to his supervisor (Brendan) to express my appreciation for Brandon’s helpfulness, but he was not in at the time I called (9:00 p.m. ).

Daniel Dailey: We pretty much shop the Okemos store for most larger construction materials we can’t get at the local hardware. Had to build a platform for a garden shed. Met a veteran there who helped us a great deal. Got what we came for, cut to size, at the right price, basically with someone guiding us to each location. Got to thank him for his service as well. Joana Lampe: I rented a tiller for a garden project online. Since it's a small project, we rented it for the day of. We had friends ready to help shovel and rake the compost and everything was set up. I got a reminder email for my rental and everything. Once we got there, we were told that staff "had been worried about this rental" because all the tillers were still winterized and we shouldn't have been able to even place that order. The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because the poor high school or college kid was getting slammed without accessible supervisor support around lunch time, but he stayed polite and apologized profusely. Not his fault, but you'd think 1) that they'd update their website, and 2) once they notice there is a problem with a reservation made 4 days in advance, that they'd reach out. This way, I had to rent from AC&E in Lansing (which I should have done in the first place, they were amazing) and do the project without the help of friends. Very unfortunate. Not impressed, Home Depot.
