Union at Dearborn - Student Apartments: what do users think?
Jonny McMuffin: Imagine paying over a thousand dollars in rent to have such thin walls between units that you can hear your neighbor, AN APARTMENT OVER, speaking at a normal volume…let alone playing video games at 3 in the morning while you’re trying to sleep :)Doesn’t matter if everything else has been good, this is unacceptable for the high rent. Nice job inflating your Google reviews with positive maintenance request reviews tooEDIT: I will not be contacting the owner that replied to this review as I cannot file a noise complaint over a neighbor simply TALKING. The walls are simply too thin, so unless you soundproof them between apartment units, there is literally NOTHING that can be done to resolve the noise issue!
Anthony Gosse: I'm not a tenant but I am there multiple times a week, while there there was bats that when mentioned to the security guard he did nothing, mold in hallways and apartments, exposed wires from the ceilings, alcohol dumped and left in elevators, broken light fixtures, a literal squirrel in the 4th floor laundry room, massive potholes big enough to destroy a tire, no cameras in big parking lot that lead to multiple apartment break-ins and multiple cars broken into or stolen all together. People pay $600-$700 for one bedroom and a small kitchen/living area with cheap furniture. I'm here for a couple days a week and I couldn't imagine the dread the full time tenants go through. RUN AND STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
Aaron Kowalski: Te only thing I would say to help improve The Union at Dearborn is to provide more sufficiency regarding virtual communications.
DD Y: Apartments are nice. Need more parking, especially for visitors. Whole mall next door with parking spaces everywhere, why not lease some space from them? DUH
Adenikinju Daniel: Really good accommodation!
Meeshawn Marathe: Mario from the maintenance team did a fantastic job in repairing my AC unit. Keep up the good work!
Milan Pereira: Efficient and great
Duha Alkurdi: It was very smooth moving-in. The guys at the office are awesome!
Kabelo Sikele: I was helped well in timeI appreciate the service rendered
Harry Rahn: Was done well and was decently on time.
K C: Beware we had our car stolen out of their parking lot. They smashed the window and drove off. Take a drive through their parking lot and notice the broken glass all over from the many other cars that have been stolen. Maintenance is slow to fix things too. The rooms are cold in the winter.
Tesia Kewley: At first everything was fine, I had moved in June of 2021 and there were no problems. As time went on I noticed when things need to be fixed they weren’t because the front office is ran by children. There are no office managers available when you need to talk to someone. They shut down the trash shoot so we could have a trash valet service but then they would charge you if you have too much trash (btw there are 4 people in the apartment) or left it out to late. I just moved out in August and they took $125 of my $200 deposit for “cleaning and repainting” but my room and area was spotless when I left. Just know they will charge you for unnecessary things and then when you need something fixed they won’t come and will ignore you.
James Olsen: Management staff is never available emergency service takes days to respond to request. I’ve been locked out of my apartment for five days I called three times and sent three emails I just get bounced around and shrugged off. Luckily all the trash bags in the hallways make nice bedding.
Crazy Husky 597: Over all went smooth ..improvements could b have check in tables outside so that easier to just go from car check in and to appropriate door where ur room is as well as have grouped by last names so no overcrowding..move in carts would b nice addition..
Saad Ali: Worst management ever. If you’re an International student STAY AWAY from this place. Your deposit is never returned and You pay extra and they don’t give you lease length options as your roommates.
Corey Small: Overall a goo0d experience, one of the closest elevator's was not working, and my daughter informed me it had not worked last year either? That elevator needs to be fixed ASAP. Really not working for a year is unacceptable.
Sandy Zalmout: Well organized and quick. The staff was helpful and courteous. Thank you all.
Della Inosencio: The elevators stopped working and had to walk up the stairs. Once they cooled down, they worked again.
Audre Bollo: Move in was smooth, the apartment was not as clean as I would have hoped but the staff was helpful and attentive with the issues we had..
Aliyah Ragland: My room is about the quarter of the size of my last apartment, it smells like animals (cats, I was informed by my roommate that her last roommates had several animals here), the parking is so limited (I have to park at the very end of the loft parking lot) and my ac/fan unit is leaking fluid down the wall

Union at Midtown - Detroit Student Apartments: what do users think?
Nicole: rent too high to not have parking
Sikandar Saeed: Really hard to beat this place. Has everything, maintenance is super quick. No complaints, 100% satisfied.
Thomas Mosher: Very nice! Just moved my son in. Everyone is friendly and helpful.
Michelle Perozo: I love it here! They have free coffee, snacks, and management is amazing:) Really close to everything especially classes!
Ramiro Perozo: Great location and staff. Union yummies are the best!
Mixsy Trinidad: Move-in went very smoothly. My only wish is that this place had parking for their residents.
curtisloewaz: ...Entering apartments without consent to check if the "kitchen cabinet doors work right" when there was no reported problem to begin with. Is this not illegal?
Bryen Turco: I lived here for 4 years as a professional student at Wayne State. You will be pressed to find a better value option in midtown Detroit - especially since rent includes utilities, internet, and cable AND units are often furnished and all have in-unit laundry. I dealt with Bethany in the front office and she is very professional, responsive, and a pleasure to deal with. The online maintenance request system is convenient and staff are quick to take action in both small and large issues should they arise. If my rating was purely based on the service and the front desk staff, I would give 5 stars. Amenities are ok with a small gym, a computer area where you can print documents for free (bring your own paper), and a common room with couches, TVs and complementary snacks and beverages. Mini social events often involving free food (good quality) are regularly organized by staff. This apartment is located close to the main campus gym (7 min walk) which is another big plus. One criticism is that there is no parking so you might have to find alternative options provided by Wayne State or simply park on the side of the street if you can find space. Another criticism - while almost entirely out of management's control - is that some tenants are not very respectful of properly disposing garbage in the trash shoot rooms, and some choose to use marijuana indoors and create a strong smell in the hallway of some floors. Barring the parking situation and the actions of some tenants, this place has been very good to me and I would certainly recommend it to those who value living near Wayne State or the midtown Detroit area.
Brooke Boyer: Looking for apartments in this area. We spoke to Amma in the office and she was extremely nice and very helpful. :)
Solomon Asiedu: I love the location, it is close to all buildings on campus and walking distance to many restaurants! You’re even next door to Starbucks and Tim Hortons! I stopped by on the weekend, and the staff answered all my questions!!
carmen perozo: My experience at the Union so far is amazing. They rooms are fully furnished which made it much easier for move in, and the maintenance staff was always so quick to respond. Management answered all my questions, and they even have a popcorn machine! It’s also in a safe place right on campus.
James S: Don't live here, especially during the pandemic. The office will regularly send people into your apartment without any masks on and with no notice. Additionally, they routinely won't wear masks in the office, elevator, or other public spaces. With a large student population and a large number of medical students this is just begging for an outbreak of COVID.On top of this the staff is rude, ignores concerns, and promises changes but never follow through. The price for the experience here is just not worth it.
Ellen Samoriski: With the new management, don't waste your time or money living here. There was a change in staffing sometime during the last school year (residents were not informed) and it's gone down hill since. The office attendant is unnecessarily rude and makes any communication with management nearly impossible. We've received absolutely no communication regarding move out which is in less than a week and I've gotten no response from the multiple emails I've sent regarding an accidental rent charge for the month of August (apparently it's being worked out). The apartments are nice and the location is great but the unprofessionalism from the staff makes it a hard place to live.
stacy roznowski: My daughter's lease is up on Monday. She turned in her keys last Monday & asked about a bill she got for August rent, she should not be paying August rent because it was paid at move in date. The guy in the office is so rude. He did advised that there was nothing due. Today she got a late notice & called. He was so rude & said obviously we know there is a problem & we are trying to fix it. Maybe teach your employees some customer service! The guy in the office was rude anytime we had questions! Well OBVIOUSLY we took our business elsewhere!
Julianne Meiu: Lived there for three years and never had heat for any of those winters. They did give out a tiny space heater at the start of each winter. That seemed like a nice gesture during the first year, but after the second year I realized they do this because they have no intention of fixing the heat. The space heater was teeeeeny tiny and could maybe heat a dollhouse if you turn it all the way up. Warm-blooded people need not apply.
hannah garlington: When I first moved in I saw the same person in the elevator about five times, and on the fourth time we decided to be friends. I think that sums up the community in the building lol. Also, the staff is super friendly and helpful.
Cammie Reed: This place is so tempting to live in at first glance. It is new, furnished, and all inclusive. Also, I have classes only in Old Main which is right across the street, so the location was perfect; however, this apartment quickly turned into a nightmare. While the office staff is great, they can't really help my situation and going to THEIR boss is where it gets ridiculous.Upon moving in, things seemed great. While expensive, it was so convenient, but soon my roommate and I started having problems with our A/C and heating units. We got a maintenance request in, and he showed up within a few days. While trying to fix it, he actually broke the unit and that caused us to be without heat for even longer. I understand that humans make mistakes, so we did not get very upset about that. Then, the heat went out. Again. This time it was a good majority of the building. It was January, so it was cold. This is also when the polar vortex happened. The managers gave us tiny space heaters that are not safe to keep on all day and night and claimed we could not complain about getting money back because we have a form of heat. I DO NOT PAY FOR A SMALL UNUSABLE SPACE HEATER.Then our power started having issues. It would flicker on and off in the middle of the day for seemingly no reason. I had it looked at, and they said nothing seemed off. Later, we found out that it was the space heater that they gave us because they couldn't get the heat back on that was shorting the fuse. So then I didn't have heat at all. I didn't have heat for almost a month, so I had to live elsewhere to keep myself a normal temperature. Now, I called the emergency service line because it was FREEZING in the apartment and I had no idea what to do. I found out that the emergency service line is the exact same number as the normal one, so guess what? No one answered or EVER returned my phone call. Now we are passing the heating issue and the power issue and things calm down. It's now the end of February and the elevator breaks. They have a guy in the next day, so I am thinking it will be a quick repair. It is now March 19th, and the elevator is still not fixed. I have since gone on a vacation and had to lug all of my suitcases up four flights of stairs. They have given us ONE update and it was two weeks ago stating that it would be fixed by that Monday, yet here we are. So now if you want to use the gym or get your mail, you have to walk down the stairs and outside across the parking lot to then go back into the building. My calls about any of these issues weren't being respected or served well, so my father started to call, and the regional manager will STILL not return his phone call. It is so unprofessional and despicable living here. I cannot wait to move out and I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody.
KiwiWithAHat (Parker): Elevator has been broken for multiple weeks now, so to go down to check my mail or print something I have to walk down the stairwell and cross the parking lot. Also hard when you have to carry a suitcase AND groceries up and down multiple times of stairs nearly every day. Noisy apartmentmates who smoke are told not to only by useless posters on the wall, and the laundry washer sounds like death and makes my clothes smell here. Windows are next to impossible to be shut, and poorly insulated/sealed making the cold and loud wind drafts audible. Put in several maintenance requests about this thing, only for the repairs to be half-arsed.
Niraj Patel: Worth it to live here!
Lena Pivetta: I lived here for a year, from August 2016 to August 2017. Our second night living here, my roommate and I were cooking dinner when all the lights in our apartment went out. We freaked out, being new there, and called the apartment emergency line, assuming in our naivete that the problem did not lie in a blown fuse in our very new, modern apartment but maybe had something to do with the building or the power grid itself. The man we spoke to brushed off our concerns. He was in Ann Arbor, for goodness' sake, he said. He wasn't about to send somebody all the way out to Detroit to flip a switch in our apartment. So the problem could be solved by going into our breaker box! That was all he had to say. We flipped the switch, but it kept flipping back off and cutting off the lights again and again until we finished cooking. The emergency line guy didn't seem to have an explanation, so we just figured something had gone temporarily haywire. This happened several more times, while cooking, and I finally associated it with the use of the back left burner on our stove and stopped using it. Then, one night in December, I came home to find our apartment completely dark once again. My roommate had been doing some tidying up, running a vacuum cleaner, when all the lights had gone out. She'd gone to flip that pesky switch in the breaker box but instead found a bit of sparks and smoke spewing from the box.We called the emergency number once again, and we were told to stay away from the box, which was in our kitchen, and, if possible, to stay out of the apartment altogether. They said they would send someone out as soon as possible to fix it. This was on Saturday night. It wasn't fixed until mid-morning on Monday, when the box was replaced entirely.I had many other problems while living at the Union, things breaking, getting fixed, and breaking again, but I think the story of our breaker box having a meltdown sums it up. Poor customer service and a very poorly constructed building for the price are what you'll find here.
