Timothy Keebler: Sadly, bridge is gone and could not find historical marker. There is parking here for a few cars, and wading access to the Huron River for fishing. Old bridge abutments still present, but no bridge as of April 2022.Visited on Weekend Wait time No wait Reservation recommended No Price for adult entry Free …More
Mike Stahl: Great day on the Huron River
Eric Kincaid: Great place to launch a canoe or kayak, though don't expect any actual services here.Lots of graffiti, and no historocal marker.
ROD Dittmar: I remember crossing this bridge many times as a youngster in the 1950s. My dad would treat us to a ride over it on our way home from our cottage on Base Lake. We would grin & laugh at the 'plankety-plank' sounds the loose decking boards would make as the car rolled across. I also remember our mom being not quite as happy about the event.......
Bradley Pine: Start of kayak run.
John: The bridge is washed out but there is good access to fly fish or port your kayak or play fetch with your dog in the water.
Arielle: This site was added to the registry in 1997 and the historical marker was erected in 1999.Side one states:"Bell Road Bridge - This Pratt through-truss bridge, erected in 1891,was built by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company ofCanton, Ohio. The bridge was assembled on site bya local crew using iron connecting pins that arevisible at the deck level. These pins, unique tonineteenth century iron work, made bridges easyto assemble and capable of flexing toaccommodate varying weights. The bridge is listedin the National Register of Historic Places."Side two states:"Dover - Judge Samuel Dexter and Isaac Pomeroy built asawmill here in 1832. After 1846, Daniel B. Sloanand Company replaced the sawmill with a gristmillcalled Dover Mills, which spurred the village’sgrowth. In 1849 the Base Lake Post Office openedhere. Sometime after 1861, Thomas Birkett boughtthe mill and built a church in the hamlet of Dover. In 1882 the post office was renamed for him.Today only the mill’s cut stone foundation and themill stream remain visible northwest of this bridge."
