Raven Nevermore: I’ve really had the best experience at this store. I’ve visited a half dozen times over the last year. They have a great selection- and the staff is nice and helpful. This last time- a lady helped me- I came in about a half hour before close. I have to drive an hour to get there- and traffic isn’t always kind. She helped me get the right coating_ and introduced me to carbide tools.I appreciate being treated well- and I love my new hobby. No amount of online shopping can replace when you get from visiting a brick and mortar store with knowledgeable staff that love the hobby.Within the first few days - I’ve already sold 2 pens, and the lady wants 3 more. Angel Green: Alway happy to shop here when I need a really nice piece of wood, but today (3/9/2022) was extra special. I had been really looking forward to having the day off to be creative and work on projects, but when the day came, I naturally deciced to have an ADHD induced bad brain day. I just couldn't think to even get started, which resulted in a lot of aimless wandering and mounting anxiety and depression. I finally picked out a piece of wood for a project, and brought it to the counter. The very kind gentleman at the register (I regret not getting his name) looked at a large gouge on one side of the board, pointed it out, and said he couldn't sell it like that. Then he said, "Merry Christmas," and just gave it to me. It's a little thing, but I REALLY needed that, today!! Thank you a million times! 💞

Bill Hordyk: Support local! Great hardware store with excellent service. Always very helpful.Besides the typical fastening/tools/plumbing/electrical/outdoor goods they have an extensive interior hardware (hooks, bars, door hardware...) selection, in stock and special order.
Anna Moyer: Everyone is super helpful: the repair folks in the back, the lighting and trendy house accessories folks, as well as everyone weeks at the cash registers and on the floor. If you've got a question, they'll try to answer it.

They worked hard to figure out how to fix it (it's just a generic vinyl window), and then replaced the broken part for me. Only charged me the material cost.

Q Amos: Had a stripped/rusted screw on my license plates frame. I had no tools or any ideas how to remove it. Asked one of the employees for help and he came out to my vehicle and gave it look. Then went back in to grab a few tools. After a few HARD tries, he removed the rusted screw and put a couple new ones in that I purchased. Thank you Joel, for going above and beyond! I appreciate it!

Jerad Muller: I've lived pretty close to this little gem for years now and I had always assumed it was a plumbing parts store. I had some plumbing issues that I was dealing with so I stopped in to find they had anything and everything you could think of in there. The staff there is friendly knowledgeable and helpful. I had assumed that their prices were going to be higher since they were a locally owned store. However to my surprise they had very competitive pricing.This place opened up in the 1860s and it holds the title of being the oldest continuously operating hardware store in the city of Grand rapids. Great overall experience and I highly recommend checking them out.

Gayle Lynn: Bought hard to find 8/32 screws 4" long for drawer pulls. Also the drill bit that was 6" long.

Jill Rothwell: Had a simple project go wrong, flipping the dryer door handle from one side to the opposite. Bent the hinge, stripped screws. Hunter did an amazing job, going the extra to straighten the hinge when the right size wasn’t available. No way to get that service in the box stores! Doesn’t sound like much but when you have a dryer with no door, it matters ☺️

David Stoffer: Jeremy and the guys at Tontin run the best lumber yard in town. The customer service is helpful and they will go out of their way to make sure I am able to get what I need for a project.

Anthony Kailing: Will never go back. Called a week prior to visiting the store and was told they had what I was looking for. So I made the 70 mile drive one way and when I told them what I was looking for, the best customer service I could get was "look behind you". The guy there never even bothered to get out of his chair.

Brian Mulhern: Everything you could ask for. I rarely write reviews but this place deserves it. I am a hobby woodworker who mostly bought materials from lowes and menards. I was a bit unsure of what I would find when I went for my first time and to my delight there were more choices than I had time for. To make it even better, the folks who work here are really excellent at giving genuine guidance on projects and options. Tontin will be the only place I buy lumber for the foreseeable future.

Grand Rapids Rustic: I’ve purchased lumber from them recently for multiple projects and also had them surface 6 of my live edge slabs. My only concerns are that prices are on the higher side and they never know what they have in stock.
Mike Francois: First time buying hardwood from a shop like this and didn't know what to expect. The owner took time to talk with me and explained his plans for making buying lumber even easier for hobby woodworkers like myself. I will be going back.
Chip LaFleur: This is a woodworkers paradise. New ownership too over in January, and they've been making great improvements. Don't let the building fool you, inside you'll find a shop, mill, and retail limber and millwork that will serve any purpose you can throw at it.They do great work, can knock out limber orders for builders and carpenters, and have a really exciting inventory for woodworkers and weekend hobbyists. I found a great deal on a spalted maple board that I've been able to turn into several wood bowls in the lathe.The folks there are talented woodworkers who are willing to spend time with you too help you understand what you're looking for and help you find what you need.Very excited to find a place like this so close to home!
