Walnut Hills Family Campground: what do users think?
Amy Given: I am upgrading my review because this is truly a beautiful location. This is a beautiful campground that is run down and does not have enough staff. They advertise self check in as in there is NO staff to help you check in. The young man Brandon that was at the "store" was nice but very clueless. Henry was helpful but had hurt his back. Robert was extremely helpful. My site is a pull forward. I'm still scratching my head on that concept. I pull in but if another RV parks in the shared space then I can't get my truck into my site to move my RV. They tell me Joe can move it for me but he was not there. My site had a picnic table in the middle of it. It had newly laid asphalt which my trucks tires left huge tracks in. Then my rear leveler was stuck in the asphalt. I just sobbed. At this point my experience here has been horrible. No bathroom at the office so travelers that have been driving all day have to wait until they get their RV set up. Or you can use the extremely gross out houses. It took 2.5 hours to level my RV that has auto leveling due to the very soft asphalt. So I got to try out the outhouse. They are making repairs to the park and I hope they hire more people. I highly recommend that you have staff to guide the campers to their site. The owner Matt lives in Colorado and is not on site. Very very disappointing. He didn't listen to me when we spoke on the phone because I told him that I needed a pull thru site. After I got there and found that this was not a real pull thru site I called Matt. He told me he would never have told me this was a pull thru site. However I remember verifying that this was a pull thru site with him. This campground is gated and if you have a big pick up truck to pull your RV you'll struggle to use the gate card from your truck. And you have to swipe to get in and out. Seriously swipe to get out? There is very little cell signal with Verizon there and for them to require you to use a cell phone to fill out forms is ridiculous. And I was told they couldn't get Internet at this remote area of Michigan. However, the office computer looked to be on the Internet. And there are houses and farms all around it so that just doesn't seem right to me.I am very very disappointed in this park. And I prepaid for 6 months. ☹️
David Jarrett: Great Family Oriented Campground!!!We've been camping here for years now, and each year it just gets better.Yes, it's an older campground, and that means that not everything is picture postcard perfect. But for simple family fun, we've never found a better campground to spend our time in over 5 DECADES of camping all across this beautiful country. We're so glad we found a perfect place for our family to make memories that will last a lifetime :-)
James Rin: Absolutely disgusting swimming area playground was okay and the arcade had little very little games and the swim plaything was extremely overpriced
Scott Bennett: Cute place. Family friendly
Amber Antolovich: First timers at Walnut hills this Laborday weekend. Definitley not the worst campground we've been to but not the best either...The positives:1.Good, large sized sites down in the front section with nice tree cover. (Some would say "huge" lol)2. Ample out houses for those without bathrooms or for emergency situations3. Wibit was pretty cool (though pretty expensive)4. Canoe/kayak rental company that will pick you up from the campground and take you up river. You end back at the campground where you started. It is quite an adventure and would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area.5. Beautiful sandy beach with nice beach loungers.6. Family activites, wagon rides, bingo, etc.7. New roads were layed this year. They are very nice. The bad...1. The swimming pond is not something I could bring myself to actually swim in. A minute standing in it waste deep was all I could muster before I had to get out. The kids didnt mind it but it may have been the grossest swimming I have seen yet. The bottom was very mucky and covered in silt, the water looked like a wierd blue-green dye. (Not as depicted in the photos, lol)2. The wibit was extreamly expensive for what it was. I could see charging day pass rates like that but campers should get a bit more than a $4 discount. My son got to go one day only. No one else in our party wanted to spend that much.(also, age 7+, my daughter was heartbroken)3. The playgrounds need some serious updating. This is a large park and we were excited to see multiple playground areas on the map but only one was a "playground" that didnt have much to offer and in poor condition. The others were just a regular swingset. I hear the current owners recently purchased the property so maybe they intend to upgrade this at some point.4. The electical seems like it could use updated. Our site was fine but a box by us was burning hot and kept flipping breakers. The camp staff plugged what was basically a house box fan into the same pole and pointed it at the hot pole... it was a bit sketchy as well. Didnt effect me directly but if one were to book site 131, be careful.5. The "fishing pond" is suuuuper small, as in, some ppl could cast their line clear over it. It was also very nasty looking. There were multiple dead fish on the shore. All in all, we had a good time. We were dissapointed in the playgrounds, the swimming pond and the fishing pond but all of our fellow campers were very nice. The river was great (clear water, sandy, lots of big fish!) The staff seemed nice. We enjoyed our stay and are glad we tried it but it probably wont be one we return to over and over again.
brent boedeker: I don't know about the camp grounds other than it looks nice and well kept. We went there to go kayaking through Chef's rentals. It's one of the best river's that I have been down.
Mark Pipa: Great nice campground easy access to kayak from
Michelle Woolsey: Such a great place for families! Very peaceful with lots of things for the kids to do. The staff is so friendly! I love that there is a great beach and lake, and also a canoe launch on the Shiawasse River!
Alex Shin: New owner needs to be at his campground to see how it's ran. Staff are never in the office, they keep closing it and going back to there camper with sign in the door, OUT To The Bathroom, be back shortly. If you need something you have to call.. I checked back for 2 hours 1 day. That is a long Bathroom break. Bathroom/showers are not cleaned daily. Outhouse are not cleaned just blow out with a leaf blower. Camp sites have trenches that need to be filled to prevent rolling ankles. Bunch of kids running this place. SATURDAY 8 20 22. THIS OFFICE SHOULD BE OPEN ALL DAY.
Becky Ellithorpe: It was tightly packed but we had alot of fun. The kids really enjoyed the wibit inflatable in the water to play on.
Angela Plummer: Excellent place. Lots to do.
Brittany Mathis: Run down and very little up keep. Everywhere you go people are complaining. The camp store is significantly over priced more than normal camp stores like 19.99 for a pair of dollar store goggles, and dollar store beach toys. Staff is trying hard but the girl at the desk is constantly on the phone and makes the staff wait. VERY EXPENSIVE nightly rates for not so good service. Also the Map says check out that to your gate code stops working at one o’clock
Debbie Thompson: We had a great time🙂the lot numbers need to be more better it was alittle confusing on finding or seeing the lot numbers....the store was ok need to be stocked with more stuff🙂
Becky Burnash: Regarding my recent stay, July20-25. This was my first visit to your campground. My family and I were very excited after looking at your website and seeing that this was going to be “beach party weekend”. By 1pm on Saturday there had been nothing resembling a beach party other than the overpriced witbit….By 2pm the dj was starting to set up and he was doing so right on the beach volleyball court, which was by the way the ONLY beach game that you had available the entire weekend (your website mentioned beach games). My kids enjoyed the witbit, however if it costs so much that you need to charge that much for families to use it then why bother? Large families go camping because that is something they can afford. They can’t afford $33 a piece for a kids toy in the water. This is really the only thing for the kids to enjoy. Unless you want to RENT a tube or a pedal bike by the hour. 😕Also, you must be 7 for the witbit and it closes at 630pm even on the weekends! Why??I sat at my campsite and had a wonderful smell of your horrific outhouses my whole visit as well. They are gross as is your ONE bathhouse for the entire campground. That is unacceptable.Friday afternoon our power was surging all day. Not sure what’s happening there but, maybe you need an upgraded circuit breaker? My husband wanted to join our kids on the witbit Saturday afternoon so he walked from the beach to the office in his swim trunks. He was told he needed a waiver, ok….”we have no paper waivers and you need a phone”He didn’t have his phone as he was on the beach and camping. Also, what about people that may not have phones? NO PAPER WAIVERS…?!He was forced to walk back to the campsite get his phone, walk back to the office sign the waiver, walk back to the campsite to put his phone back then go back to the witbit…which is only open until 630 so hurry!!Your ice at the store is melted! Turn the temperature down. You can afford to since you charge $4/bag.I was told Rachel was coming to my site. Haven’t seen her yet 🤷🏻‍♀️
sirena collins: We liked that we easily got in and off the river with our kayaks
trisha Long: Friendly campground. Lots of trees. Beach swimming, fishing, tubing on river. Volleyball, playgrounds, small arcade.Wished the campstore offered more but we love it here.
Amanda: My four year old absolutely loved fishing at the pond. He enjoyed riding his bike around the campground. Our favorite part is being able to get a campsite on the beach. Makes for a longer trip to the showers but worth it with small kids.
