Austin Meyer: Really cool bar with great drink selection and service. The place can be chill or crazy fun which just makes it a place to visit more than once.
Tianna L: Steel Cat is a great place to go grab a drink. I suggest sitting up at the bar if you like a little entertainment to go along with your beverage. They have toy construction equipment that you can play with on their frost rail that was very entertaining. The bar tenders are also very nice and attentive.
Dahman Flahr: Came in before work for a delicious bloody Mary. Prompt, efficient, friendly service. Got off work early and came back for a post shift drink. Different bartender but still same level of service. Beer tap selection might be a bit light but they have a nicely rounded out full bar so plenty of quality options.They also have an Ice shelf? Built into the bar that your drinks can sit on while you're drinking. I decided I love it and no one can take that away from me. It's fun.It can get loud in here as it's a small place so I probably won't come on weekends but weekdays are perfect for me.They specialize in bloody Mary's with several options. They also have a bloody Mary bar which I will have to come back for at some point.

Marianne Guthrie: Not my favorite place to go. The crowd is very specific here, and it's a small place. Have been lucky enough to snag a table the times I've been here, but it's usually quite busy. The beer choices aren't that great, but they have plenty of liquor. The bartenders that I've dealt with here are nice.

They had a 2 man band and they were terrific!The food is the best especially the Tail pipes (mozzarella sticks), and the French Onion soup (it had steak in it) also the Quesadilla had so much meat and cheese I've never had one so good and filling. The wait staff was attentive.I will go again next time I am in Michigan.It's a must go to, if you are in town.

Alexandra Victoria: The best chicken and waffles I have ever had, and I've had it in many states. Had to go back while visiting Grand Rapids and their fish tacos were also life changing. Jake Buccieri: I would have went 3.5 stars if given the option. The Olive Burger was coined as a favorite item, and it surely disappointed. The “olive” was just Mayonnaise with a few chopped olives. Hardly any olive flavor at all. We ordered them medium, and they were cooked completely well done. The side salad was just leaf lettuce and about 3 croutons. On a positive note, the Bloody Mary was terrific.

Michael Belligan: Down to earth local bar vibe, great food (fried chicken sandwich & fish tacos) but during my first visit (tonight) service was a bit slow. Maybe 10+ min to get a drink on several occasions despite it only being 20% full seating. Maybe someone called in sick? I dunno but the food was good enough to come back and find out! Also it’s loud! Didn’t bother me a bit but if you want a quiet speakeasy or are hard of hearing this isn’t your place - at least from 6-9pm when I visited.
joebreeet: Tucked back on the outskirts of downtown and even while dealing with construction in front of the restaurant they have not slowed down at all. The regulars know to keep coming in and it's no surprise. The food and drinks are exceptional. Lots of made to order from scratch and hand battered menu items. Spedrock W: First time here with friends from out of town. Husband and friend got the garage burger. I ordered build your own burger. All three burgers were seasoned to perfection and delicious. Definitely the perfect classic bar burger! My friend and I had the hand cut fries that came with the burgers. My husband ordered a side salad with his burger. The salad had a variety of veggies and fresh crisp Lettuce. The Garage has a very nice selection of beers and spirits as well as Pepsi products and lemon aide. Something for everyone. The staff and overall atmosphere were great! A fun place to spend time with friends and family while enjoying great food and drinks. Will definitely be back.

Christine N: This was my first time here, and I enjoyed it. I have been in GR all of my life and keep forgetting to stop here. My son's dad was playing in the band, and so we went to hang out. The outdoor area is really cool. I definitely want to go back. The sunset was beautiful. The food that I had was average to me. Not bad at all though. I have no complaints at all. I will be back for drinks next time with my friends :)

More than a week has passed with our email and no response.Arrived at noon, weren’t done until 2pm… because of the service. :-( very slow, waitress wasn’t attentive to what we ordered (received wrong sides), side of ranch took 10 minutes to get and they brought out cheese instead, portions were quite small for the price we paid. Unsure what is happening here, but service needs attention. Be ready to wait, and wait so more for your food.Can’t give it one star, though. The food, when it did arrive, was tasty and the outdoor patio is a fun attraction. Unsure if we will be back.

The female bartender in outside bar was incredibly rude and age discriminating- I am 58. We will never go back. We didn’t know that you can’t order a drink from the bar, you have to go to a specific place at the bar. A patron got all upset because we went to an open stool to order. When we questioned why and we never heard of this, he called security. Security allowed the patron to feel they did the right thing. The bartender yelled at me when was telling her some bars have reservations to sit at the bar, I thought maybe that was the case here. We felt embarrassed and uncomfortable for really no reason. Crazy experience SO BEWARE.

Kymmie Loveless: The pizza I got was really good, we were on the restaurant side of the building. Our waitress we did not really see she got our order then someone else brought out the food. Then saw her again when we asked another waitress for a pitched. Then she bought that had to ask another person after that cause it was wrong.They have screens at the booths and there was candy behind the plastic that another patron must have stuck though the hole. Probably will still try again and go on the boat next time.
Jeannie Lee: We had a party of 7 adults and 3 kids and they were able to give us a table large enough for us all to sit together. The kids enjoyed playing the games. Our waitress was very good, tentive, and despite it being loud in there (as it is part bar, part restraunt) she got all our orders correctly and our wait was not long for our food. Everyone liked the meals they ordered. Our bill was around $200 for 10 meals 6 alcoholic drinks and 7 non alcoholic drinks which was a very fair price. Definitely would recommend whether your looking for a family place to eat or a bar for a few drinks.

Marcel Gossett: I asked for a soda water, bartender said it was $3. I didn’t realize they charged for soda water and said “oh my bad, I didn’t realize a soda water cost $3, nvm” - he reached over the bar and took my drink out of my hand that I already paid for and dumped it and then called security to kick me out. They escorted me out and called me “cheap” because I said never mind on a $3 soda water. Unbelievably rude for no reason when I was trying to be reasonable.

A young women took the hat off his friend’s head and when his friend went to retrieve the hat the girl kicked him in the balls and a woman from the bar kicked him out. At what point and time is it allowable for someone to remove something off a person’s body without asking? And then to cause bodily harm??? shame on you Back 40!!!

Emma Bemma: All my friends and I went here and got Covid. That’s 6 of us.We only connected at this establishment. All felt fine before hand. Did not see each other in any other locations outside this establishment. A guy I met in the bar that night also tested positive for Covid.Edit: Doesn’t mean the employee had it but another customer might have brought something in the same night we went. We can also discuss how Covid can be passed as a common cold and be asymptomatic. Just because your employee doesn’t report symptoms it doesn’t mean they don’t have it.Be careful going here, because the night we went was very crowded. You had to move shoulder to shoulder to get to the bar.

Josie Rice: 10/10 bar. I’ve gone to almost every bar in GR but somehow always end up at this one because I genuinely just have the best time here. The staff is fantastic and do a great job of taking care of the place and it’s people. I’ve lost my keys and wallet here multiple times, and they always are returned and kept safely by the staff. The DJ is incredible (would highly recommend seeing him every Friday night!), and really knows how to get the crowd going, and follows through with song requests. My friends and I live about 30 minutes away but know a drive to the 40 is always worth it. A true Grand Rapids treasure❤️ Yeehaw!

He skipped over their service for no reason.When my mother asked why he was skipping over her, he ignored her. She then stated he was missing out on a good tip(which he was).It felt like the bartender had something to prove and completely went off on my mother. Which was completely uncalled for.Of all people it blew my mind that our fun night turned out like this especially since we as a family just wanted to come out and have fun. We have never been kicked out of a bar before. Even the Bouncer seemed like he didn't understand what was happening. It was truly disappointing as we were looking forward to a fun night of dancing and instead we felt completely out of place and ultimately embarrassed.I will never go to this bar again nor will I recommend it to anyone. I hate that I have to leave this review over a few human beings on a power trip, but it truly ruined our night.I sincerely hope this never happens to anyone else that is over the normal age of 22 in that bar.

My bartender laurel was a superstar, she made sure she got our order correct and that we enjoyed it even though she was busy with 50 other people. If you’re looking for somewhere fun and genuine in Grand Rapids I definitely suggest coming here!
Brendan Gough: Short bouncer who was stuck on his own power trip decided my 23 year old girlfriend had a fake ID. Called the police (the number they provided for this specific situation) and they decided not to show up. When compared with exact same michigan enhanced ID the bouncer seemed to hesitate and gave the ID back (which they wouldn’t with fake ID), awesome management sided with their bouncer who we’ll be contacting the next day to complain and question. Absolutely ridiculous and will never be going back.
Carissa Kuchenberg: I am 23 years old and the short, young bouncer (idk his name) denied me for a “fake ID” when it is absolutely real and I have never owned a fake ID. I will never return to this bar. They were extremely rude and disrespectful. I wish I could give a zero.
syd v: Obviously this bar/bouncer doesn’t know any other license than a Michigan license just looking at the other reviews here. I went with my Indiana license as well as my credit card to get into the bar. I gave my license to the bouncer… looked at it for 2 seconds and told me to get out and that my license was fake…. Didn’t ask me any questions about my license or anything like that. I asked to see his manager to get to the conclusion of this, he went to the bar and from what I’m assuming was his manager laughed at my real Indiana ID and said exactly “this isn’t real give it back to her but don’t let her in.” As if not giving it back to me wouldn’t be a big deal and I wouldn’t call law enforcement as that if my actual real ID. Place is wrecked.

Brett Coughlin: If I could give a zero, I would. We paid $100 for a table and within one hour (9:00), the place was so full that there was no way that you could dance on the floor. Their website advertises line dancing and shows pictures of a large dance floor that are not reflective of their bar. We tried to get our money back before 9 and the manager was rude and would not give us our money back. Advertising is deceptive and we will never be back. This picture is there dance floor at 9:00. Compare this to their website…

The bar keep was friendly, happily offered a replacement for the Perrin Black draft that tasted as if it had soured, but the second wasn't much better. There were only a handful of people there. Burger and fries cost a little more than those at the other nearby bars, but they were exceptionally good. I can definitely recommend.
