They didn’t have it on the menu but she said she’d work it out. Mission accomplished! It was exactly what I wanted and crazy delicious. The vibe was nice so I ate in. The band was plenty loud though. I rarely drink anymore. Maybe once a year. I paid almost six dollars for a rum an coke, but could not taste the rum. Hmmm.

Anyone says otherwise are just bitter cry babies who complain on Google reviews because they were kicked out or cut off. As a former bouncer of 15 years. I've seen tons of bogus bad Google reviews. When someone says the staff was rude or kicked them out for no reason, come be really we all obviously know their is always a reason. So in conclusion don't believe the haters just come on down and have a good time. CJEERS!!

All of the bar tenders do a great job making sure the customers are well taken care of and not over served. I love how diverse the bar is . Ironwell also brings in a variety of entertainment; from the bands, dj bingo,karokee and line dancing. Tomas, Audrey, Jen, Taylor, Neavaeh, Liz and Lauryn are all amazing bartenders and really care about their customers. I love this bar and will always support them.
Ben Meade: The male bartender there is INCREDIBLY rude to customers. His attitude towards people who come here to relax and have a drink is absolutely miserable. I watched him be very rude to the person next to me for NO REASON AT ALL! I immediately closed my tab and as much as I hate to leave no tip I didn’t leave a dollar and left. Will not be returning to this place. People beware find another place to go it’s not worth it here or you’ll find yourself dealing with this bartender and his nasty attitude.
Sarah M: The male bartender I believe his name is Tomas is very very rude to customers. I have dealt with him along with many other people I know. He is snippy as hell to anyone who goes up to the bar and orders drinks. I try to avoid having to go up there because his nasty attitude ruins the entire vibe of trying to go out and have fun. I have dealt with it myself but have witnessed him antagonize customers numerous times then have them thrown out when there is a response from the customer. They have taken my drinks off the table and have them thrown out after I literally just paid for them because this bartender was getting very nasty with me and when I decide to respond I’m thrown out and my money just spent on drinks are thrown out. Something needs to change with the quality of service. Will not be returning until this bartender is given the door. If you don’t like bartending with a positive attitude obviously this isn’t the job for you.

Christine Homminga: Was our first time being there, and the bartender that greeted us was nice. The food and drinks were good, but we were a little uncomfortable. Around 7:30, tables started getting reserved. They were supposed to move us, but "our" name was nowhere to be found. So we sat at the bar, which wasn't as nice. Cause we couldn't easily look at each other. Eye contact was barely made, and my sister waited roughly a half hour. To order the drink that she wanted but after 30 minutes of waiting. She decided not to get anything and we left. My bestie was looking forward to trying the bull, but it wasn't going to be up and running till later. Fortunately/ unfortunately we will not be returning.
Rex Roscoe: My wife and I went to see a Karaoke competition last night (which was REALLY good - great talent and one of the best sound systems I've heard in West Michigan). Had some drinks and some food too. Overall, a great experience, with a really cool atmosphere!

Marcel Gossett: I asked for a soda water, bartender said it was $3. I didn’t realize they charged for soda water and said “oh my bad, I didn’t realize a soda water cost $3, nvm” - he reached over the bar and took my drink out of my hand that I already paid for and dumped it and then called security to kick me out. They escorted me out and called me “cheap” because I said never mind on a $3 soda water. Unbelievably rude for no reason when I was trying to be reasonable.

A young women took the hat off his friend’s head and when his friend went to retrieve the hat the girl kicked him in the balls and a woman from the bar kicked him out. At what point and time is it allowable for someone to remove something off a person’s body without asking? And then to cause bodily harm??? shame on you Back 40!!!

Emma Bemma: All my friends and I went here and got Covid. That’s 6 of us.We only connected at this establishment. All felt fine before hand. Did not see each other in any other locations outside this establishment. A guy I met in the bar that night also tested positive for Covid.Edit: Doesn’t mean the employee had it but another customer might have brought something in the same night we went. We can also discuss how Covid can be passed as a common cold and be asymptomatic. Just because your employee doesn’t report symptoms it doesn’t mean they don’t have it.Be careful going here, because the night we went was very crowded. You had to move shoulder to shoulder to get to the bar.

Josie Rice: 10/10 bar. I’ve gone to almost every bar in GR but somehow always end up at this one because I genuinely just have the best time here. The staff is fantastic and do a great job of taking care of the place and it’s people. I’ve lost my keys and wallet here multiple times, and they always are returned and kept safely by the staff. The DJ is incredible (would highly recommend seeing him every Friday night!), and really knows how to get the crowd going, and follows through with song requests. My friends and I live about 30 minutes away but know a drive to the 40 is always worth it. A true Grand Rapids treasure❤️ Yeehaw!

She then stated he was missing out on a good tip(which he was).It felt like the bartender had something to prove and completely went off on my mother. Which was completely uncalled for.Of all people it blew my mind that our fun night turned out like this especially since we as a family just wanted to come out and have fun. We have never been kicked out of a bar before. Even the Bouncer seemed like he didn't understand what was happening. It was truly disappointing as we were looking forward to a fun night of dancing and instead we felt completely out of place and ultimately embarrassed.I will never go to this bar again nor will I recommend it to anyone. I hate that I have to leave this review over a few human beings on a power trip, but it truly ruined our night.I sincerely hope this never happens to anyone else that is over the normal age of 22 in that bar.

Brendan Gough: Short bouncer who was stuck on his own power trip decided my 23 year old girlfriend had a fake ID. Called the police (the number they provided for this specific situation) and they decided not to show up. When compared with exact same michigan enhanced ID the bouncer seemed to hesitate and gave the ID back (which they wouldn’t with fake ID), awesome management sided with their bouncer who we’ll be contacting the next day to complain and question. Absolutely ridiculous and will never be going back.

syd v: Obviously this bar/bouncer doesn’t know any other license than a Michigan license just looking at the other reviews here. I went with my Indiana license as well as my credit card to get into the bar. I gave my license to the bouncer… looked at it for 2 seconds and told me to get out and that my license was fake…. Didn’t ask me any questions about my license or anything like that. I asked to see his manager to get to the conclusion of this, he went to the bar and from what I’m assuming was his manager laughed at my real Indiana ID and said exactly “this isn’t real give it back to her but don’t let her in.” As if not giving it back to me wouldn’t be a big deal and I wouldn’t call law enforcement as that if my actual real ID. Place is wrecked.

Brett Coughlin: If I could give a zero, I would. We paid $100 for a table and within one hour (9:00), the place was so full that there was no way that you could dance on the floor. Their website advertises line dancing and shows pictures of a large dance floor that are not reflective of their bar. We tried to get our money back before 9 and the manager was rude and would not give us our money back. Advertising is deceptive and we will never be back. This picture is there dance floor at 9:00. Compare this to their website…

The staff are laid back and friendly, the musicians are very talented and really know how to work the crowd, everyone was having a blast. We spent like 5 hours there hanging out, left for another bar next door and had one drink and went back haha there's a night club upstairs, but unless you're under 25 years old, you should probably just stay downstairs and give the piano man $20 to play some piano man.

DJ5050 1: If Rory is behind the bar, you will be treated right and some. Cozy hangout spot with darts pool and tabletop shuffleboard, drinks are strong, shelf options (especially Irish whiskeys) are expansive. Beer drinkers, don’t worry — they have Guiness, Harp, Smithwicks, an Irish cider and a few domestics on tap. Good times await!
