Roots Combat Club: what do users think?
Stive Duarte: If someone is coming to Michigan and want to train BJJ or if you are looking for a gym you need to stop by Roots combat club, Alex will show you the best jiu-jítsu, the gym is beautiful and ppl are amazing! 10⭐️
Max Sherrod: I’ve been at roots for 2 months now. The facility is extremely clean. Staff is helpful in development of students. Higher belts are also very friendly here and help. If you are hesitant on trying a martial arts (Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, kick boxing and striking) . Look no further than Roots. You won’t be disappointed.
Ryan Deters: Roots is an incredibly professional combat gym that provides a welcoming environment for new members. There are so many classes to choose from, and the instructors are top tier.
Leah Marie O'Connor: I had the privilege of dropping in while traveling and let me begin by saying, the facilities are so clean and well maintained. Alex, the owner, was on vacation but even in his absence the staff was warm and inviting. I’ve been to a lot of different jiu jitsu schools and there are some where white belts are just thumped on and an attitude of “eventually you’ll learn” but not here. The staff focuses on a strong foundation of technique before drilling positionals and getting into rounds. My no gi game has definitely fallen off but the students were very respectful and made for good partners. If I lived in the region, this would be my school. If you’re curious to try the struggle snuggles and not sure where to start, don’t overlook this gem. Your future self will thank you.
joe blow: Excellent training facility.Great, knowledgeable instructors.Family friendly environment.Everyone works with everyone. No people with ego's trying to go hard or show off.Alex works with you whether you want to do a membership or drop in.Very reasonable prices.Very big and spacious.Inside looks brand new and its very clean as well.Everyone is respectful to eachother.I give this a 6 out of 5.That's how awesome this club is!
Andrew Pettibone: Alex and Justin are awesomeClean gymVery accommodatingThanks guys!
Gordan Jokic: Roots is a tremendous martial arts academy. The facility is top notch, always clean, and the instructors are excellent. It's a welcome environment for all skill levels. Highly recommended!
nate lowell: Alex has a very inviting and peaceful presence. The atmosphere and expertise at roots bjj cultivates a very positive learning experience.
Duraid: Super clean place. Everyone is freindly. Nobody is trying to kill you. Its all about learning and having fun here.
Rich Berryhill: Great place to train. Small quiet and friendly people.
Billy Kizy: The roots family is so encouraging and welcoming every single day that I have been training here, I started about 5 months ago and will be competing in my first tournament in a few weeks, I’m truly blessed to have such amazing people in my corner!!! Whether it’s for self defense, an exercise, and or for competition I give this place a 10 outta 10!!! they have my stamp of approval. Tell your friends
Mukhlis Alabdalrazzak: Alex is an amazing coach and the facility he’s built is nothing short of amazing. This gym has been extremely welcoming to newcomers such as I and I can attribute that quality to Alex’s inclusion and commitment to teach.
Aemil Palm: Fully equipped dojo primarily no-gi grappling/jiujitsu but also offers kickboxing and kids class.Very welcoming environment and very high level jiujitsu.
Nick Bastianelli: Roots is an excellent gym. Great facility and awesome Coaching. I highly suggest - 10/10!
Andrew Molczyk: Alex is great! He’s a great teacher for someone that is new. He makes sure to break down the moves slowly and gives the needed feedback to make sure you’re doing it right. The community he’s built is open and everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. The facility is beautiful, clean, and very well taken care of. You can tell there is a lot of pride surrounding Roots.
Justin Shina: Alex is a very passionate and dedicated individual. He has superior knowledge in all aspects of jiu jitsu. Alex takes his time with all his students and displays a keen attention to detail with their best interest in mind. He maintains a positive attitude and is quick to build strong relationships with others. His teaching will give you the confidence to believe in yourself.
Serge Sorser: Great studio for kids to build confidence, learn jiu jitsu and have fun!
Bassam Kadry: GREAT PLACE FOR BIRTHDAYS TOO! Our kids have benefited tremendously from Roots. I was pleasantly surprised to find out Alex and his team also do birthday parties. Nerf Gun wars and dodge ball. The place is spotless. It is clean, safe, fun and the kids had a blast. Thank you for making our 6 years old's birthday memorable for us and the entire family. If the grandparents were shooting nerf guns. Thank you!!
Amit Hingorani: Best trainers For kids and adults ! They are very professional and the place Clean and well maintained ! Highly recommend it
Anthony: Super clean place, no awful payment schemes like some places around here with required 6-12 month commitments, just monthly payments or a year long payment with a discount. Awesome instructor and always people to roll with.
Jordan Jones: Very clean gym. Nicest facility I’ve been to

Detroit Jiu-Jitsu Academy: what do users think?
Daniel Miller: DJJ has been a staple in the Southeast Michigan BJJ/MMA scene for some time. Really strong reputation throughout the Midwest with phenomenal adult and kids programs. I trained here for nearly five years after relocating for work, and had an excellent experience with the team. For beginners: the environment is welcoming with great instructors and zero pressure to compete/roll with folks above your skill level. I competed twice in five years and never felt pressure to do more than that (though competing is certainly encouraged). For advanced athletes: the gym is home to several current and former MMA fighters. Several of the guys have had fights in Bellator, One FC, and the UFC.For BJJ purists: several athletes have competed and performed well at IBJJF Worlds and the ADCC trials. You'll find really strong instruction and a jam-packed gym with tons of high-level talent to roll with. Really excellent experience training there.
Desi Reyes: My husband started training here about 2 years ago and has been BEGGING me to come try jiu-jitsu. As someone who has never done any sort of grappling, to say I was intimidated would be an understatement. Coach Danny and Coach Anthony were immediately welcoming and open to having someone as new as me in the gym to come train. The atmosphere and training environment cannot be matched. I’ve grown so much as a person and athlete since joining the DJJ family. There is no other place I want to continue my jiu-jitsu training except at DJJ. I’m grateful for this gym. I’m grateful for amazing coaches. I’m grateful for jiu-jitsu. ❤️
Cole Reed: Good gym
Mariarosa Phillips: All 3 of my boys come here, we’ve been with DJJ for 8 years. My oldest started at 5, he’s 13 now. This is where we started and this is where we will stay. Thanks to all the coaches here at DJJ.
Nay: I have 4 of my son's here and they all started at 5 years old. My oldest is now 13 and still going strong. I wouldn't take them anywhere else. Thanks Detroit Juijitsu for all of your hard work.
Demingus Coates: I came from another bjj school and I thought. My bjj was good so I thought.I got my butt handed to me, and it humbled me I didn't have any basics I didn't know anything I was a 3 stripe white belt from another school and was about to get my blue belt but found out I wasn't ready for my blue belt at all,and I was glad that I came to Detroit Jiu-jitsu Academy. Now I feel like I know and learning Jiu-jitsu thank you to all the staff and friends on working with me on my jiu-jitsu because before my jiu-jitsu sucked eggs 🥚 very bad thank you all again. I feel like I'm learning what I paid for.
MMAGamblingExpert: I started my grappling career at a very young age specifically folkstyle wrestling, transitioned to freestyle wrestling and thought I was invincible. I went to jiu jitsu gyms all across and was fairing well against theyre toughest guys. I can confidently say this is the #1 jiu-jitsu Academy I’ve ever been too. Professor Danny is a jiu-jitsu mastermind. I grappled with him once and he knew exactly what my weakness was. Everyone in there from white belt to black belt is legitimate. Khalil fadlallah is by far the best back taker in Michigan, I’ve taken personal classes with him and this guy is legit as they come. Highly recommend to anyone in the area to visit this gym. Actually for anyone who is serious about their jiu-jitsu journey. Love these guys soo much I’ve met some of the best people In there. Some of they’re purple belts would be black belts in 98% of other jiu-jitsu schools.
Juan Vazquez: Amazing academy ran by amazing people. Very highly skilled instructors and very welcoming atmosphere. Weather it’s Jiu jitsu or MMA I highly recommend DJJ and there other satellite locations .
G Lauren: Danny and the instructors care about each and every student. My 13 y/o started a year ago, and is also working toward his black belt in TKD. This is a learning curve for him as he has been learning a lot of kicking and striking for years now. He loves it and feels it gives him a greater advantage as far as self defense goes. It’s also a great workout, which I love…tires my kid right out because they work hard!
Dakota Anderson-Maul (Bop-It): The team here is always welcoming to new comers and others in the grappling community! If you compete they respect that by giving you complex rolls that you learn from.
Ryanm Gossett: Danny was very welcoming and pro cross-training. Anthony, who taught class has an admirable sense of humor and hospitality. They didn't charge me a mat fee, so I was also nice enough to buy a shirt and rashguard. Will definitely be back and be proud to rep the Detroit jiu-jitsu syndicate on my travels. Thanks guys!
Kingdom Builder: Awesome class! Professor Parker taught a great escape from the turtle position. Then got to roll with training partners at every level from white to black. I drove all the way from Arkansas to be here. Can't wait to come back when I can stay longer. Oss!
meadow Phillips: Started training here about 6 months ago after switching from another local gym. Best decision I ever made! Coach Danny and Coach Anthony REALLY care about their students and my Jiu Jitsu skills and knowledge have increased dramatically. DJJ for life!
Jarred Brooks: I’ve been to a lot of jiu jitsu gyms . This one is the best ! I’m a professional fighter have fought in ufc one pancrase rizin and Belator .
Toxic Skull Ranger: It’s a good place it helps you to fight good overall its good so yay bye
Abe Barlaskar: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueI met the owner, Danny, at a competition a couple months ago. His students are professional, and he leads by example. He's a class act. Highly recommend him as an instructor and Detroit Jiu-Jitsu Academy for instruction.
Hysam Hammad: There are several reasons why you want this to be the school of choice for your BJJ needs; 1) The instructors are amazing. All of them are detailed in making sure you nail down the moves. The slightest move like having a thumb in a certain place will change your game. 2) the competition is very tough. You will never get better if you do not train with people that are better than you. DJJ has so many competitors all open to bettering their game. 3) Innovation. These guys are constantly chasing the newest innovations in the game. What worked yesterday might not work today, these guys are constantly upping that game. 4) the gym character is unsurpassed. These guys make learning jiu jitsu fun. Just check out some of the videos they put out. 5) The gym is just amazing. The mats are comfortable saving you from a ton of injuries that you don't need from practicing. Finally 6) the kids program is outstanding. My kids team usually dominate the tournaments and seeing each kid support the other is something that will translate into huge confidence for your kids.
craig odom: My son and I planned a trip to visit family in Detroit for Christmas 2021. I sent a email to Detroit Jiu-jitsu in November 2021, to see if they would let my 11 year old son train while we were in Detroit. They responded immediately, that they would love to host my son while visiting. When we first arrived to the gym, I was very impressed with how clean and organized the gym was. Coach Danny walked over to us and introduced himself, and took my son to the mat where the other kids were. After day one training was over one of the kids that my son rolled with came over to my son and shook his hand and said you are really good at jiu-jitsu. My son said that he likes the school, the kids and the coaches here. As a parent, that tells you alot about a school when your kid brags about it. I highly recommend Detroit jiu-jitsu to any parent that wants their kid to train in the sport of Jiu-jitsu. Thanks to coach Danny and staff for welcoming us with open arms. Awesome school.
Unknown Secret shopper: Positive:Quality
Nameer Hanna: The instructors and facility here are top notch. From start to finished I loved my experience at DJJ. Unfortunately had to move for work, and I will miss every second spent here. They hold you accountable and humble you, something we all need. I was new to jui jitsu when I joined and every instructor was willing to take extra time with me to ensure I understood what they were teaching. The sense of brotherhood between everyone involved is awesome too, everybody there wants to see their peers succeed and get better, which is hard to come by. I drove an hour each way just to be able to come here. If you’re looking to start jui jitsu or switch schools, look no further than DJJ.
Hamidul Islam: Positive:Professionalism,Quality,ValueDefinitely one of the best bjj gyms in Michigan, friendly atmosphere and very welcome. Highly recommend.

New Way Training Center: what do users think?
Nathan Zhang: Came here last November before I had this google account which I'm posting this review from. MMA class was intense. Judo class is very welcoming to newbies.I'd recommend this gym, sure. The only reason I'm not a member here and thus not taking lessons/sparring here, is that they don't teach Muay Thai kickboxing, they teach Yaw Yan kickboxing, and I'm a Muay Thai style kickboxer.
Dylan Kittila: The best people, the best environment, you become part of a big and very caring family here. I’ve been training jiu jitsu here for just under two years, and it’s been one of the most gratifying and funnest experiences of my life. The coaches really care. Doesn’t matter if you’re 5 or 50, male or female or anything, everyone’s kind and supportive and encouraging!
Eric Rose: Just joined, love it already!
Fortnitegamer777: very nice trainer goes by the name sandro. Helped me out. Only one problem. His weiner was always pointing out hard. Not a issue because it wasn’t very noticeable because it’s small but still a minor issue. This is his face
Leo Hajduk: The instructors are top notch! Happy to work with you when your struggling and full of motivation and encouragement! They will train you at any level. They will help you to succeed!!
Sammuel Lahaie: Amazing Jiu Jitsu Program.-Friendly/Knowledgeable instructors-Clean mats-Clean bathrooms-Clean shower-Good prices-Great scheduleIf you’re looking for a BJJ gym to try out or switch to, I highly recommend New Way.I think they offer a free session; I recommend trying BJJ even though they have more than just BJJ. I can only speak on the BJJ aspect though.5/5 recommended!
Marcus Redman: A great atmosphere with great people! Very welcoming and no ego!
Miles Ortolan: This gym is FIRE!! Everyone there is very helpful and friendly, would highly recommend this gym to anyone who wants to start boxing. Just watch out for Casper, he always cooks too much spaghetti and brings it in. The spaghetti isnt bad, but he gets really offended when you dont eat a incredibly large portion. like really... I love the gym, but about once a month I have be avoid casper until everyone else has taken the time to eat his spaghetti. Maybe it wouldnt be such a problem if he bothered to salt his pasta water.
Andrew Cholagh: Great atmosphere and people!
Christina Barbar: Hard workout, Felt great afterwords. Friendly environment! Staff/coaches is great and welcoming!
Belanda Daoud: Great cardio session! Burnt lots of calories
Yulissa Gallegos: The staff here is super nice, giving it a very warm and welcoming atmosphere where I can get a good workout in!
Jordyn Carl: Instructors are great! Fun way to exercise and meet amazing people!
Nikki Rini: The coaches and owners here have made me feel like a part of their family over the last 18 months and if you are looking to get good training in for you or your kiddos - for ALL levels of training and competition if your brand new or if you have competition experience in boxing , jiu jitsu or MMA new way is a great place for you to train!
Kristian Jovanovski: Awesome place to train and it has a great community
Jason Stachura: Love training at new way. Instructors are all grade "A" and have a vast knowledge of boxing, MMA, BJJ and fitness training. Coach bobby breaks down boxing to its simplest form which makes for easy learning and most importantly he shows how to apply in the ring. Stan, Sunshine, Izi, Jordan, Marcus and Jim are all real good at thier craft and make you feel comfortable training even if you are new.
Jeff Packett: I have been taking my daughter 10 years old here for 4 years. When we first met the coaching staff my daughter was quiet, timid, and had no self confidence.Fast forward to today she is a leader, mentor, independent 14 year old and is going to a National tournament soon to go up against some of the best female fighters in the U.S.Through hardworking and dedication from the staff and my daughter this could’ve never been achieved.Thank you coaches and Newway for all that you do!!
situation effect: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueGreat place to train and very discipline
Kevin Smith: So I have been going to New Way for about 8 or 9 months doing just Jiu Jitsu there. It really is a great no pressure place to learn the craft. There are a variety of skill levels and good class sizes that are not overwhelming. They take good care of you whether you want to learn to compete, in it for the fitness, need a confidence boosting hobby, or (like me) are doing it to have a skill for your job in law enforcement. The rest of the facility is awesome too if you want to work out, hit something, or throw people around in Judo. Make this one of your first stops if you are looking for a martial arts gym... They have kids classes too... It's adorable.
matthew windquist: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueNew way has an amazing atmosphere as soon as you step in the door. I always feel welcome and that the instructors genuinely care about teaching. Other gym members are fun and make it feel like a family. GREAT JOB NEW WAY!
Drew Guaresimo: The best atmosphere in town! Will make you feel comfortable while training and enhance your abilities! I highly recommend this to any and all levels!

Santos Saenz: Great environment and instructors around. Would Highly recommend this club for all ages and levels!!!!!!!!
Alexandre Furne Ribeiro: Amazing Jiu Jitsu Club! I had no sort of background in Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling or Combat Sports whatsoever, I've never exercised regularly in my whole life, and yet I started coming to class here and I ended up loving it! Every single person at the club is extremely helpful and patient, there is no negative competitive air about the place at all, every time I go to class I always end up grateful then I got to go and always learn something new. Highly recommended even if you're new to BJJ!
WallyD: Steve makes you feel like you are at home, it is a very welcoming environment and not only will you learn the technique to make a submission happen but you will learn every possible scenario of that technique, if you want to learn about the BJJ culture this would be the place to go it is not like your average BJJ gym.Love u guys

A very friendly and safe environment where everyone wants to see you improve and is willing to help you with new techniques.
Gregory Spahlinger: The club has a welcoming vibe and a focus on Jiu Jitsu for self defense purposes. It is home to a mix of older and younger participants, at a range of different skill levels. Professor Steve is excellent - both in terms of skill and teaching ability. If you are looking for a new place to train, or new to the art, the club is worth checking out.
Parker Jean: This place is truly special. If you are searching for a place to learn self-defense you are in the right place.
