Patrick Runkle: Super impressed with Steve. True professional at his craft. He did not rush the stencil. We looked a couple different sizes and anatomical graphics to get this right. He also had to hear my wierd thoughts on life, so props to him. The shop however is a nice clean building, which I appreciate from a health and sterile perspective, but they keep thier front door locked. It just looks like a closed up shop from the outside. Please update your covid policy to make a more open and welcome environment.

Brooks Weber: To be clear, my experience took place in 2019 and was motivated by the death of my folks. It was to be my first tattoo and sleeve and I traveled an hour from the east-side to Iconic. I made an appt with Andrea based on her online samples and a connection to my Dad, who had taught at CCS where Andrea attended. I came in for my appt and showed her my ideas. She took a $200 deposit, committed to working on concept and scheduled me out several weeks. She later called/texted me saying she was moving and her sister was having a baby so she had no art or concept yet. She said if she didn’t complete them before appt., we could reschedule. I asked her to email me some examples before I drove another hour into the city. No provided no follow up communication. I later got a call from studio mgr telling me I missed an appt. After explaining what had occurred, he had Andrea speak to me and she said “her professional policy” was not to email art or discuss prior to an appt...then she asked me to drive in and if I didn’t like it, I could reschedule. No explanation of this at first meeting or in subsequent communication. I’m a 60 yr old Army veteran spending in excess of $1000 for my first tattoo to basically commemorate my family, she knew this, but acted insensitive and unprofessional. Lastly, Andrea’s speech was slurred in several conversations. It made me feel she was not reliable and was throwing my concept together at last minute. In the end, they refused to show me ANY art or concept or refund my deposit. I’m told she’s gone now but the owner/mgr of the shop at the time should have done right by me, either refund my money or refer me to another artist.

Seth Kleinglass: Great shop downtown right on Michigan Avenue. They have a number of very good artists working here. Each has a unique style but they all work together very well. I liked the vibe of the shop too. Everyone was friendly and the girl working up front (sorry I didn’t get her name) was awesome to work with. They are very clean, knowledgeable with their craft and have very good rates too. I have been looking for a new shop for a while and this is my spot! So far I have had work from Buddy and Jay and it has been a great experience. Ill be back.

Renee Thomas: I am giving this rating because me and my sisters came in there Saturday for Candi's special she was running for the mom's. The receptionist was very nice as we was trying to get clarity about the deal that was being ran however didn't get to catch the man who was the piecer name but he was very nasty and rude to the point we walked out and left because his rudeness was truly unprofessional and I will never spend money where I feel disrespected and i just couldn't believe someone could be so rude to customers coming there to spend money. I also let candi know and she apologized and was willing to accommodate us but I couldn't bring myself to come back there so I definitely respect her for trying to fix it but that "man" that works there truly needs to learn how to be professional and also learn how to speak to women period!!!

I chalked up the cheap price to the fact that the piercer wasn’t all that friendly and didn’t give any aftercare instructions. He knows what he is doing and has been doing it for a long time. I only did part of my upper sleeve but I will definitely be back to finish the rest of the sleeve!

I don't usually have reason to leave a review like this but seriously, wow.First, I scheduled an appointment over a month in advance for them to reschedule it the day of. Then when I showed up they told me they don't do finger tattoos, which was confirmed over the phone. Then when I was completing paperwork, they asked me to pay in advance, which I never do for tattoos, you have no idea how bad it can go, a service should never be paid in advance. He responded to this by saying "Good luck finding a place that'll do it without already paying." Like man, seriously? I'd been to two different tattoo shops that month that ask for a deposit but never full down. So then he told me asked me to leave. Some truly incredible social skills here. Not to mention they had all these pictures around of memes that you should pay more because it's a tattoo. I'm glad it didn't happen because just an incredibly uncomfortable experience all around. Awful.

Harley Harrison: A highly recommend seeing Shawn at Nine Lives Tattoo for all your piercings. I got my flat helix pierced at a different shop and the piercer has used the wrong methods and materials to pierce me. I ended up having my ear grow over the back of my piercing (due to a micro back the piercer had used). I was in so much pain. I called Nine Lives Tattoo and Shawn stayed late just to assist me. He was great at evaluating what had happened and explaining what the other piercer had done wrong. He kept talking to me to distract me from the pain as he removed the piercing and even gave me a stress ball to hold on to. He was so professional and friendly. Once my old piercing has healed, I am going back to Shawn to get it redone and for all further piercings. Thank you, Shawn! I can't express my gratitude enough.Service:Piercings

Carmen Cook: I called four times and on different days to check their piercing prices or if they did piercings (since piercings is listed in their services). No one picked up the phone (later came to find out there is no shop phone). But I went there anyways like a dummy, and the guy who answered the door was really nice and explained to me that they don’t do piercings, even though it’s listed in the services. I ended up going to the morang location and they did a great job, but I wish they had a shop phone or took piercings off their services page.

April Howard: We can not say enough about our experience at Motown tattoo and our artist Mike! My husband travels a few times a year for work and we get tattoos on every trip. I usually get the crabby person who is bored by my ideas. This was far from the case! Mike was so awesome in helping me come up with the perfect piece to add my step son's name next to my boys. He took the time to look with me and made it fun. My husband wanted Skelator but a little different as our oldest son had recently had one done. Again Mike took the time to help customize a vision. It was a long afternoon but having an amazing artist who was so knowledgeable, kind and funny made the entire experience. Looking at Mike's work we were blown away and felt silly having simple pieces done by such a talented artist. However we called on a Sunday for a walk in. The shop is so welcoming. All staff we encounterd were professional but fun. The cleanliness and precaution standards were top notch . The woman at the front desk who buzzed me in was very helpful and nice, as for the artist “Keith“ he had a very unwelcoming spirit when I told him exactly what I wanted. Very shady and completely rude about my previous tattoos done by another artist. He then told me what I should get instead of what I wanted. Keith if you see this then you need to brush up on your customer service skills. You may do some good work but your unwelcoming spirit definitely pushed me in another direction for tattoo work.
